The old inter-webs work in strange ways .....I so needed this very message at this very moment in time. It’s been a fairly unproductive spring where life has gotten in the way of art....which gets me a little panicky, as someone who needs to bank the hours in the studio - time for the failures and experimentation and paintings gone awry- in order to have any chance of turning out something decent. Will i even remember how to paint? What if i don’t want to do it anymore? What if i can’t? And of course when creating becomes, in essence, a job, then the guilt piles up when you feel like you’re not doing your job well. I’m trying to breathe deeply and realize that while I do need to allow time to nurture and explore it and “do my job” a) what is more important than this business of “life” and b) creativity is not solely about time. My art is within me and part of me and from me, and always will be. It’s waiting. It’s there. And sometimes beautiful life and all of its ebbs and flows, and craziness and unexpected twists and turns, demands to ride shotgun. And it is all OK. Oh and c) coffee makes everything better. Richard Diebenkorn used “printmaking as a way of firming up an idea,” said print publisher Kathan Brown. The medium was part of the way he problem-solved, often beginning drawings or paintings in his studio and then continuing those visual thoughts on a copper plate. . “He liked not being able to see with any clarity what he was drawing on a plate,” continued Brown. “He took plates home and drew things and people. If he was having trouble with a painting, he sometimes would copy it onto a plate to see what it looked like reversed and stripped to its essentials.” The resulting impression of an inked plate reveals the mirror image of the plate itself. . Our #DiebenkornDraws series looks at the artist’s process from a print to works on paper. We begin with this early drypoint showing a view of the artist’s studio. Notice in the foreground a utilitarian clip-on lamp, his preferred lighting mechanism often depicted in his still lifes.
