I used to read a LOT. Then I started grad school and didn’t have any time to read for enjoyment (ie: I could have had time if I wasn’t spending every second of my free time with my dear Matthew). I did read a lot in grad school- sometimes two books a week, but it was all non-fiction. After I got married and had my children I was far too distracted to read. I couldn’t have if, even if I wanted to because, like many mothers, it would put me to sleep. Consequently, my undying love for Victorian literature was put aside for about a decade. Interestingly, it wasn’t until my brain injury that I really got back into reading faithfully. I had many months where I was unable to do anything, so I listened to hundreds of hours of audiobooks. I know it isn’t the same as “reading” but my listening comprehension is better than my reading. (I am fairly certain I have mild dyslexia, though I’ve never been tested). On average, I listen to about four books a month. While I usually end up needing to rest at some point during the day, a lot of my listening is done while doing chores with my headphones or in lieu of Netflix at night. I am on a Thomas Hardy kick right now and am going through as many of his works the library has available. I've been reading a lot about Scandinavian folklore recently, and I discovered a creature that hasn't creeped into the folklore that I'm familiar with: The Hulder/Huldra/Huldrå. Her name translates to something along the lines of "Lady (Ruler) of the Forest" or "Forest Woman/Spirit" and I can imagine her living in a forest just like this one, shrouded in mist. The Huldrå are said to be impossibly beautiful, with long hair and a crown of flowers, but if you see her from the back, she has a long tail (sometimes that of a cow, or a fox, depending on where you read about her) and appears hollow like a treetrunk, covered in bark. As many female creatures in folklore do, she's known to lure men to their deaths, or sometimes simply keeps them as lovers or slaves. Depending on what you read, the Huldrå can be kind or malicious, and sometimes the same Huldrå can be both, depending on the situation. I think she's a fascinating being and I thought I'd share her with you! Oooh what a fabulous weekend. I had such a great time on Saturday at the @frenchicpaint event, catching up with old faces and meeting some lovely new ones too.
