These two did me proud this morning and slept in till after 7 poor Maria had to go to work before they were awake. I could hear her moving across the landing like a ninja so she didn’t wake them . The girls were sleeping through till not long ago. They usually wake for a feed now though has this happened to anyone else? I think we need to get them to give up their dummies but the thought of having to comfort them both when they are screaming in the middle of the night without them is frankly too horrendous to consider! The subtle art of swaddling a newborn . This is a skill that NICU nurses and Mother/Baby nurses get REALLY good at (because we know that a good, tight swaddle = a happy, sleepy baby). . So why IS swaddling SO effective? It reminds your baby of the womb! Anything you can do to create an environment that mimics your warm, dark, quiet, cozy uterus...your baby will LOVE. Swaddling gives your newborn boundaries similar to the walls of your uterus - they like to feel snug and cuddled! . THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER: the swaddle needs to be tight enough that your baby can't wiggle out (loose blankets in the bed are NOT safe for sleep). Around 3 months old, or once baby can roll over, swaddling should be stopped altogether for this reason. . ⚠️HOWEVER the leg area needs to be loose enough to allow free movement of the legs for proper hip development. Otherwise your little one can end up with something called hip dysplasia‍♀️ . So here's how to do it . 1️⃣ Fold the top left corner of the wide side of the blanket down about 1/4 the length of the blanket and place baby on the blanket with her shoulders in line with the top of the folded corner. . 2️⃣ Fold the left side over baby's body and tuck tightly under the right side of her body. . 3️⃣ Fold the bottom of the blanket up and tuck it tightly under the right side of her body as well (leaving room for her legs to extend all the way). . 4️⃣ Fold the right side over baby's body and tuck it tightly under the left side of her body. . . Ta-da!! “Never set a child up for failure” is an important part of Montessor philosophy. It means every task/activity/work/play given to the child must be achievable and have the right degree of challenge, so not too easy (boredom) nor too hard (failure impacts their self esteem). So here are some signs I looked for before introducing the rattle to Anika: 1. Could hold my little finger for more than a minute. 2. Grabs my hair/ clothes with ease. 3. Palms are open more often. 4. Trying to grab the mat during tummy time. 5. Easily finds her hands to self soothe. 6. Has been observing her hands for a few days. 7. Has been seen practicing the open/ close movements of the hand. 8. Has been consciously (I think) batting the mobile with hands. It is off course crucial the rattle introduced is just the right size for their little hands. I got this ‘black and white crochet rattle” from Etsy. All babies are different and many Montessorians use different signs to see their readiness. But this is what worked for us and hope you find it useful and feel free to share your signs of readiness before you introduced the rattle.
