When people ask me how I got so good with dogs....the answer...ive been in the game for a while now and had a lot of practice learning and adjusting from the mistakes that I’ve made. You cannot punish fear out of a dog! Let me say that again: YOU CANNOT PUNISH FEAR OUT OF A DOG. If you’re working with a trainer and you have a fearful dog, and that trainer puts a prong collar or remote collar on in lesson one: RUN. If you’re working with a trainer who tells you you need to be alpha and dominate your fearful dog: RUN. If you’re working with a trainer who doesn’t believe in using food or rewards to motivate a dog: RUN. If you’re working with a trainer and your dog has his tail tucked the entire session: RUN. Rosie here is my most recent BnT graduate. She was somewhat nervous of new locations because she wasn’t socialized a ton as a puppy. She was a handful (zero obedience, zig zagging on leash, rushing up to people) so field trips were no fun prior to formal training. That said, when we did go out she was nervous. So did I punish her?! No! That wouldn’t even make sense! (“Hey let’s go out in public where you’ll be nervous so I can yank & crank and make the experience worse!”) Instead I used movement, praise, food and the right environment to set her up for success. I showed her new places are fun, and took her to less busy places at first to build her up then utilized the #artofdoingnothing to help her relax. I praised and rewarded both curiosity and focus, and over time she started to relax. Then I held her accountable for her behavior (aka Heel) and made each experience fun & positive. Punishing a dog that’s nervous doesn’t even make sense. And guess what! 99% of aggressive dogs ARE NERVOUS/FEARFUL. Building trust & respect is of top priority. Even the biggest, nastiest dogs are fearful. They’re the bullies on the playground taking other kids’ lunches. And yet they cry themselves to sleep at night. If you have a fearful dog, work WITH the dog not against the dog. Build him up, don’t tear him down. In this video, Rosie was starting to relax in busy places and showing 100% trust in her handler. Because of our muzzles, we’re best buddies! It’s #muzzleupmonday folks! That means we’re going to share some muzzle benefits and insights and we challenge you to do the same. Post, share, educate! Get the word out to help break the stigma and educate the public of the positive uses of muzzles. Featured in this photo is our friend @mochi_and_kiwi Mochi gets nervous when meeting new dogs because he doesn’t like when they are very high energy or all up in his face. I’ve been helping him and his doggie parents utilize a muzzle, some counter conditioning, recall practice in distracted moments, and positive socialization to help Mochi know what to do when he gets overwhelmed. Mochi here is actually harmless, but because when he gets nervous, he growls, this makes others nervous. We utilize the muzzle to help everyone feel comfortable, including Mochi! Without these muzzles, I would have been reluctant to introduce Tucker and Mochi. Tucker doesn’t always respond well to confrontation by other dogs. The muzzle helps me know that even if he is challenged, confronted or annoyed, he will never be at fault. These two boys have become pretty good buds over the last several weeks. I think maybe that they appreciate the moral support #muzzleup #muzzleupclub #muzzleupproject #muzzlemonday
