Ya know how we do....just another day of producing shut down, fearful dogs via E collar training. • As always, the dogs will tell us their side of the story. I’m pushing the button every time I give a command. A short update on Jack our highly aroused and highly aggressive dog. He came to us pretty entitled, wanted nothing to do with any of us, and definitely wasn’t afraid to show it. - We worked him in a muzzle his first few days here, but we have gotten him to a place where we feel pretty safe as we are not asking a lot from him at this point. We are working on the fundamentals and shaping all of his behavior with a food lure. - Jack also avoids eye contact (another mixed signal that lots of people would interpret as a dog avoiding conflict, but Jack just loads up without even looking at you.) so we are working on focus with him as well. We want him to look at us so we can get a better read on him as well as get him comfortable with engaging with humans. - Jack had never felt a prong collar, hardly ever got walked on a leash, and he fights pressure big time. It’s important to note that Joelle is barely giving him any leash pressure when he throws this fit in the first clip. We started him out by making things super easy, and as we begin asking more from him, we will put the muzzle back on as this guy isn’t afraid to use his teeth on humans.

Quem disse que a gente nunca se coloca no lugar do cachorro? . . Essa turma tá sensacional! Amanhã tem mais! *a disclaimer for this video* we will not tolerate any owner shaming when it comes to leash handling or the dogs behavior. Your comment will be deleted and you will be banned from this page. Most owners have years of struggling before they come to us. They can’t even leave their home with the dog. That’s why this woman was at my seminar in the first place- to learn how to better train her dog and herself as a handler. - This dog came into the training center wildly out of control and couldn’t even get through the doorway without exploding. This owner was struggling with her dog acting this way for the entirety that she owned it. - Within the first 30 minutes of the seminar we had the dog in a much better state of mind and the owner learned how to walk with a purpose and gain some confidence as well. - It’s most dog owners first instinct to “white knuckle” a leash and hold on for dear life when their dog is reactive. This is why I focus so much on training the humans how to work a leash properly and communicate better with the dog through training. The results come much faster when the handler is confident in their own abilities. - We were able to make some awesome progress with this dog over just one weekend, and this woman now has a plan of action to go home with to continue their success.

Prong collars: as barbaric as they look, they are actually THE least invasive training tool out there. They are designed to not put pressure on a dogs trachea or to be able to choke a dog. We have all seen a dog in a flat collar at the end of the leash, pulling its owner, and gasping for air. You will never see a dog in a prong collar doing this though. Why? Because it’s specifically designed not to. - Will a dog make an audible on a prong the first time it wears one or whine on the walk because it can no longer pull and lunge like it used to? It might. But we also see dogs make audibles on slip leads, martingales, and harnesses. The dog is protesting any sort of leash pressure, it is not in pain. - We see a lot of leash reactive dogs become a little more whiney or unsure on the walk once we stop the reactivity. This is not because the dog is in pain. It’s because the dog is finding a new coping mechanism. It all goes away eventually. The more you practice the good stuff and teach the dog what you want, all of the nonsense straightens itself out. Then you have a more confident dog who can go out in the world and do things with you. - This clip is from our YouTube Live Show, “What Would Jeff Do?” Episode 534. You bring the questions (and a sense of humor) and I bring the answers. You can find us at the link in the bio. -

Meet Nikko. 145lbs of “do what I want”. He had used his mouth on his owner, their friends and family, and a final, serious, fifth bite that required stitches. Just getting him kenneled up upon arrival required him and I to have a very serious “conversation”, and now we are good. But this dog is not for the faint of heart and I’m very grateful for the years of experience and my mentors who have taught me how to safely handle dogs of this caliber. Nikko is what we call a 1%er in the professional dog training industry. What do I mean by that? I mean that he is truly dominant-aggressive. Not fearful. Not insecure. The dog literally has an abundance of confidence in his ability to use teeth to get his way. The word “dominance” gets thrown around (usually incorrectly) by lay people, pet owners, and dog trainers alike, as a blanket term to describe dogs that are pushy and rude and attempt to overwhelm other dogs and people. However, that is not actually “dominance”; that’s just an obnoxious, pushy dog. There is rarely intent to do serious harm and a pattern of following through. What folks fail to understand, is how truly rare a “rank” dog of this nature is. That being said, I see this trait in #rottweilers more frequently than in many of the other breeds we have coming in. It’s genetics, and fascinating! Did you know that a truly dominant dog does not go out looking to start fights or make a lot of noise? They are actually often quiet and calculating and self-serving. These dogs tend to be very serious about ensuring that they are in charge of a situation in every sense by claiming space, and maintaining order. Generally speaking, we find these dogs actually choose to avoid conflict a lot of this time, as they see it as a waste of energy. They will not hesitate however to use violence as they see fit, often with little warning. A truly dominant dog will not go start a fight but will often “Sherriff” a situation where clear leadership is lacking. Even if they do not start a scuffle with a dog, they will finish it. In context of a handler, dominant or rank dogs do not often respond well to being asked to move their bodies or accept even fair...(cont’d in comments)

It’s moments like this that spark so much joy in all the hard work and training put into these 2. These lucky mutts came with me to work today for the first time in quite awhile and were superstars. I remember first bringing Bruce on group walks with me, he would need to be soft muzzled every time a dog would come in the vehicle (especially to stop the barking) and for greetings when we started the walk. Over time I learnt more and more about different training methods until I found what works for him. I could throw him all the treats in the world and make a positive association with the dogs coming into the vehicle but at that point I would be just rewarding the behaviour I don’t even want in the first place. When I started e collar training with him i knew it was a tool that would be able to help me with his reactivity but I didn’t realize just how much. I’m able to bring a new dog, who he’s never met into the vehicle without a reaction from him. He actually met 2 new dogs today on the group walks and didn’t need a single correction when I was loading them into the vehicle. He either puts himself into avoidance and will lay own and ignore the dog or he will have a polite greeting. It was the same kind of story with the dogs I bring into our home for pet sitting, I would have to bring Bruce out across the road to do a walk first or to meet on ‘neutral’ territory which is all fine and great but at the end of the day it was making my job harder then it needed to be. I could easily bring a new dog into the house if Gibbon was there and all would be fine. Why did it have to be different for Bruce? He started picking up on the same thing inside the car vs at home. It’s been months where I’ve also been able to walk inside the front door without him reacting to new dogs in his house. I’m so happy that Bruce has Gibbon to guide him through stressful situations and teach him how to be a calm and balanced dog. These 2 have a bond like no other ‍♀️ .. . . . . . . . . #yycdogs #calgary #reactivedog #reactivedog #balancedtraining #bros #rescue #ecollartraining #ecollar #training #walkies #pack #komondor #instadogs #dogsofinsta #rawfeddogs #rawfeddogsofinstagram #doggos
