Recent dinner with friends. A nice bottle of 2014 Lucien Le Moine Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet kicked things off. The 1961 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste was still very much alive, but not as robust as the last time I tried this. The 1990 Château Clinet was nice as well, but needed more time to open up, and exhibited less truffle and iron than I’ve often found in this wine. The 1990 is very close in quality to the 1989 btw. We finished with a 1991 Guigal La Turque. While it’s an excellent vintage of La Turque, I still prefer the 1989 and 1990. #batardmontrachet

Leflaive tasting. These wines are miles apart. 2013 Batard (Mag) was clumsy tonight, masculine and intense reminiscent of a young Coche 2012 Chevy was firing on all cylinders. I really like the 2012 Leflaive - as mineral as ever but ripe, generous with typical intensity and tremendous length.

Ramonet Bonanza - Flight 5 4th place: Ramonet Batard Montrachet 1985 (magnum). Out of the 19 bottles this tasting it was the only true off-bottle. Cloudy and completely dominated by acetaldehyde with fino sherry saltiness. Bummer. 3rd place: Ramonet Montrachet 1996. Showing older than it was but without being truly oxidized as the wine wasn’t rendered flat as you get in many premoxed wines. Sugarcane, chrysanthemum, dried mango, dessicated coconut, salted caramel. Ripe and round without that 96 acidity to balance. Knowing that both 95 and 96 were patchy at Ramonet I guess this bottle’s cork allowed too much oxygen ingress which expedited the aging process. 2nd place: Ramonet Batard Montrachet 2007 (3x voted 1st, 5x 2nd). Intriguing flavour profile witch cool preserved lemons, peanut skin and spiky acids. Behaving like a cool vintage Chablis, one of the most austere and almost fruitless wines in the line-up. 1st place: Ramonet Montrachet 2006 (5x voted 1st, 3x 2nd). Must have been a first for me to see a 2006 white ending up on top anywhere. But fair enough, this was almost a doppelganger of the 2009 Montrachet. Unashamedly decadent with everything in overdrive: tropical fruits, yellow flowers, mint, oak and hazelnutty reduction (not unlike PYCM). Thank you so much for sharing both at @nnakarestaurant Scroll for part 2 pics from our dinner last night.  Santosh n @justinlee18 both flew out from NYC for this dinner.  Now with Michelin, N/naka is truly a destination restaurant.  Both have dined at the best restaurants in the world, Justin was a Somm at a Michelin 2 star resto in NYC.  They know their cuisine n I think they had a lovely dining experience. . I am honored when guests fly out 1000s of miles to attend a dinner and I try my best for them to have a magical night. Ramonet Bonanza - Flight 1 From a recent superb tasting that featured 19 Ramonet grand crus of which 10 Montrachets. All served blind with only the host (not me) knowing all the wines. 3rd place: Ramonet Batard Montrachet 1999 (2x voted 1st, 1x 2nd). It needed quite a bit of air but then it showed a terrific fruitforward profile with pineapple, spicy ginger, lime panna cotta and spearmint. Great acid and mineral backbone, at the start of its drinking window. I guessed it to be a Chevalier. 2nd place (2x voted 1st, 3x voted 2nd): Ramonet Bienvenues-Batard Montrachet 1999. Showing distinctly older than the other two wines. Coming very strongly out of the gates with crazy complexity of candied nuts, dried tropical fruit, chrysanthemum, old wood, caramel and cinnamon. Quite fat for a BBM and the only wine this flight that went downhill in the glass with aeration. I thought it was a a much older Montrachet for its complexity and density. 1st place: Ramonet Montrachet 1999 (4x voted 1st, 4x 2nd). Showing at least at decade younger than it was but this was a total showstopper. It needed more air than the Batard but with time emerged a large scaled wine on both nose and palate with Montrachet opulence and complexity. Very rare to have such a voluptuous tropical fruit driven wine with a preserved lemon type of minerality and bright cool acidity. Very very proper and I called at least one wine correctly as it felt it just had to be the full monty. It was truly not obvious to identify the flight’s vintage as the BBM showed distinctly older. Was leaning towards 2008 as some of the Ramonets show quite a bit of age and they have this acid streak these wines displayed. When the wines are this good I am so happily wrong in all my blind tasting efforts.
