Richard Diebenkorn’s “figure paintings, many featuring women sitting or standing within domestic interiors or exteriors, are at once mute and intimate, meditative as if capturing a moment in time in stereoscopic colour,” wrote Sarah C. Bancroft, curator of “Richard Diebenkorn” at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 2015. “The figures are rarely discernible as individuals, rather they are general players within the scene, a human presence that is but one part of the structure and interplay of the total composition; for this reason, their faces are often obscured or lack the definition of a true portrait. They are not lonely or positioned on the edge of mental desolation or disconnection, rather they serve as energetic components within a balanced whole.” . This balanced whole is partially achieved by the artist’s division of the composition into three main sections, a technique he frequently used in both his abstract and figurative works of the time.
