Hehe, check out that grin! Beirut, I Love You is now part of the TED bookstore!!! Currently accessible to some of the greatest minds on the planet here at the TED conference ✨ It’s so important for Arab writers and artists to share our stories with the rest of the world. This type of cultural activism is what dispels ugly stereotypes, builds bridges and brings our communities closer. One love. Yeah!! #beirutiloveyou #ted #books #tedfellow
So, back in 1995, a young woman walked up to me on my first day of class and declared “I am Bahia and we are going to be friends, OK?” I looked up and agreed. Ok! She was wearing a white knit sweater and blue jeans. I liked her incredibly short hair. I loved her confidence. She looked across the room and pointed to the third misfit in the room (us being number 1 and 2), a girl with brightly dyed orange hair. She pointed at her and said “her too.” The three of us would go on to become the closest of friends, enduring grueling years at the AUB graphic design program, supporting each other and dreaming together. We pushed the boundaries of design ... and life. We worked, we cried, we laughed, we fought, we loved, we danced. People thought us to be strange, but I can tell you, it was just passion. We cared more about typography than orthodoxy. Cared more about equality and revolution than docility and obedience. Cared more about creating than conforming. We didn’t fit in. But, we were convinced that we were going to make the world a better place, through design, education, comics and art.
Bahia would later go on to found the graphic design program at the American University of Cairo and paint on the walls of Tahrir “a thousand times no” ... Lena became an incredible comic book artist and co-founded Samandal Comics Magazine becoming a huge catalyst for bringing Arab comic book illustrators together.
Bahia Shehab and @lena_merhej I am so grateful for our Beirut in the 90s that made us the women we are today. I am grateful to that fierce spirit of collaboration and co-creation that we allowed to nurture us.
And look how beautifully the Universe works. Bahia and I meet again. Now as TED Senior Fellows.
We never compromised on our dreams. Don’t ever compromise on yours. ✨♥️ #ted #ted2018 #tedfellow #sisters #arab #women #rock #makeartnotwar #beirutiloveyou #dreambig
