He had been set up by his enemies. Daniel was one of the favourites of Darius I of Persia. His competitors talked Darius into making a new law that forbade anyone to ask blessings from anyone else but Darius knowing full well that Daniel prayed to his god three times a day. The punishment was to be thrown to the lions. Daniel was confronted and thrown in with the beasts and told that if his god protected him, he would ho free. The next day Darius came to check and Daniel was alright. He was released and his accusers were eaten (Daniel 6: 1-28). Rubens painted it on massive painting (330,5 cm wide) but we don’t know for whom. It could well be that he was fascinated with lions and the story was a good excuse to paint them. He worked for the Habsburg court in Brussels and they owned an elaborate menagerie. That meant that he had access to real lions and that was not an opportunity to pass up. If you look closely at especially the sleeping lion you can tell he spent a lot of time observing bored animals in a zoo environment. He must have made many drawings of animals there that he would use for years to come. In fact, two of the lions on this painting I have shown you before. I have included a detail of it here, but you will have to scroll back to see the rest. Clearly they are the same lions in the same pose, in this case painted by Rubens’ friend Jan Breughel who must have borrowed the drawings. By the way, Rubens did not follow the Biblical story to the letter, because in the Bible Daniel would have to be about eighty years old. I love church! Church is where fun, cookies, and friends are. I also get to ride the “edidator” to the children’s rooms and (best part) learn about Jesus! And sometimes I play in front of church with friends afterwards.
