Our pond and market garden are both certified Monarch Gardens by the National American Butterfly Association, and this Milkweed plant is a key component Milkweed is the monarch’s only nursery. They lay their eggs on the underside of the plant’s leaves and the milkweed’s toxic sap (the milky substance seen here) prevents predators from eating the eggs, and in return the butterflies pollinate the flowers. But the symbiotic relationship doesn’t end there! Once the caterpillars emerge from their eggs they feed on the sap, making the caterpillars and eventual butterflies toxic and less attractive to predators. This powerful defense mechanism causes other non-toxic butterflies to imitate the monarch’s appearance to ward off predators.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Our habitat team has planted milkweed throughout the farm’s restoration areas in the hopes to help the monarch’s in their yearly southward migration. This may be my first ever selfie on here. I can never got the hang of it really. But, the reason for it is to support perhaps one of the most important causes in the world right now. . . We know our forests, specifically the Amazon rainforest, hold most of the carbon existing on earth, allowing us to live. It is also home to many tribes and their people. Right now, MILLIONS of acres are at risk of deforestation in the rainforest for the purpose of "progress" aka development and plunder of natural resources. We've heard it all before. And yet we still have to fight. . . The Waorani people specifically are taking action against this attack on their homeland. They've already gained almost 400,000 signatures in protest, as well as showing up in court to fight and at the UN for help. Go see @amazonfrontlines to follow and add your support. . . Because the problems we face today don't know country borders. They are global. Their fight must be ours. So I'm going into this weekend with intention. To enjoy the little miracles of the forest I call home and indulge in all it offers, and yet also to remember that it is sacred but not permanent. As you can see, my glass is empty and I was waiting for someone to open a new bottle! . Benoît Lahaye, farmer and winemaker, has been quite a revelation to me, producing amazing champagne from the Grand Cru village of Bouzy and certified biodynamic since 2010. . This rosé champagne has been produced in the maceration method as stated on the label, 100% pinot noir, whole bunch maceration for 18 to 30 hours, aged 40% in amphora and 60% in oak and malolactic. Beautiful! This is a latergram from last month’s tasting. . I also managed to get hold of a bottle of his Cuvée Violaine when I was in the region last Easter I was interviewed for ages by the wine shop before I was considered “worthy” of buying and enjoying the bottle. Meditations on adaptation- pictured here is the Andean tuber- Mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum), which is a nasturtium relative that grows a vigorous vine and peppery tubers. We’ve been growing them for years (albeit barely successful) and I’ve recently been pondering that the only way to help them adapt to our area is to allow them to go to seed, gather that seed and start the long journey of selecting the best performing individuals from there. When we have grown them in our warm Mediterranean summer climate, they do not thrive as they are adapted to cooler temperatures and more equatorial day lengths. And yet curiousity and intrigue compel trying. Why? Because they are beautiful and bizarre and unique. Stay tuned for progress.
