#SundayFunday – Pretty much everything about the blue whale is huge. Its heart is the size of a VW Beetle, its tongue weighs as much as an adult elephant, and some of its blood vessels are so wide you could swim through them, and yet there is a grace and beauty in the movements of the Blue Whale. Around the start of the 1900’s, records show that there was an estimated 250,000 blue whales in our oceans. When the global hunting moratorium was introduced in 1966, that estimate had dropped to just 5,000! With modern ships, satellites and aircraft, a better estimate can be given today, however the estimated number is still dangerously low, at around 10-15,000 individuals. Leaving this magnificent creature – the largest animal to have lived on our planet, classified as endangered on the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List. With Norway and Iceland continuing to kill large whales, some of those caught in 2018 being described as hybrid Blue whales, they are still being hunted despite their protected status. Add in the accidental deaths through ship strike, noise pollution, chemical and radioactive contaminants and marine debris. Their recovery will be very slow if any at all.
