Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay and it’s also #OCDAwarenessWeek—a great time to talk openly about mental health so we can all work together to raise awareness, promote understanding, and encourage empathy. . Check out my story this week for links to interviews, articles, and other resources I’ve found helpful, not only as part of my research for #EveryLastWord, but also to help family members and friends who need my support. . I couldn’t agree more with Kanye’s new album cover. Being bipolar is either awesome, or I hate it. This week I hate it I wasted 5 hours yesterday feeling debilitated by depression (I think triggered from stress) and just couldn’t shake it. I got mad at myself for wasting so much time and not being stronger. Not helpful, I know. But I finally got myself up, took Bandit on a walk and my spirits started to lift. I may be back down again today, but I’m trying to remind myself that this too shall pass. We can’t all be happy all of the time, but learning what helps us in the dark moments is a start. So far all I have are walks with B, exercising and organizing Suggestions welcome!

Welcome to July. In May and June we celebrated Mental Health Awareness and Men's Health Awareness. This month, I hope we all can move this awareness into action. Stigma is one of the central barriers to us opening up the conversation around mental health and getting people the help they need. Stigma is the implicit biases and ideas we have about mental illness. Until facing our mental health challenges and symptoms is not a disgrace, we'll continue to have a mental health crisis in America. Two things you can do to fight stigma today are: 1. attend a lecture or educational event to learn more about mental health @namicommunicate 2. Examine your own implicit biases, for example, what do people with mental illness look like in your mind? What did your family or community teach you about mental illness growing up? How do you fight mental health stigma? . . . #stigma #fightstigma #mentalhealthawareness #drewramseymd #eatcomplete #menshealth #mentalhealthstigma #depressionhelp #depression #anxiety #wellness #healthandwellness #nutritionalpsychiatry #psychiatry #integrativepsychiatry #brainhealth #feedyourbrain #NAMI #mentalhealth #brainfood #shame #doyourpart #breakthestigma #bringchangetomind

Rare selfie on the grid! My face is gracing your presence today to talk about something very important! Long post warning, but please read. . You might notice my totally rad @shopbando Science! top that I customized, or maybe the beautiful moon necklace by @thesilverwren. But I’d like you to look at the other necklace, the one that says “Depression.” Also from Bando, this piece is important because it is designed to introduce and normalize dialogue about mental health. . I chose the Depression necklace because it’s the most uncomfortable for me to talk about. And I want that to change! I’ll talk your ear off about my anxiety (it’s part of the anxious thing), but depression I’m not as eager to discuss. Still unpacking the why, maybe because it’s my most serious mental health issue. Like life-threatening sometimes. And that’s really fucking personal. I carry a lot of shame with it, but it’s also really important to talk about. And that’s what this necklace project is all about. . I struggle with depression. Every. Fucking. Day. This is the face of a depressed person. Even when I’m laughing, or have the occasional burst of energy, or feeling happy, I still struggle with it. That’s right, you can be happy and depressed simultaneously! What?! Every moment, there’s that piece of my brain that just wants to shut it all down. Sometimes it has been so severe, I’ve had to take 3 months off work. Sometimes it scares the shit out of me. Sometimes I want to disappear, or just curl up and hibernate until my body finally gives up. Sometimes, it’s just that little dark shadow in my brain that I acknowledge and say hey to. And sometimes it can completely consume me. It varies. . Look, I manage it. I have managed it with medication, I have managed it with healthy self-care practices, with therapy, with journaling, with being kind to myself. It’s a constant effort and a life-long endeavor to manage it. And that’s ok. It’s more than ok, it’s me. It’s part of me, and without it I would be someone else. That’s something I still work to accept and embrace, but sharing it with you, Internet friends, is one step in the process. . Be vulnerable. Open up. Talk about it.
