“We have two beautiful daughters–Richa & Archie. Richa was the most perfect child anyone could ever ask for. She never troubled me for anything. She’d always be in a corner, drawing or coloring. After Archie was born, the two of them would always be together, having fun. Growing up, she saw our financial hardships, so she never had any demands. When she’d fall ill, she’d refuse to spend on a doctor’s fees. She didn’t want to burden us. Even when she travelled for classes, she’d only take 20 rupees. If we gave her even 10 rupees extra, she’d return it. Despite being passionate about art, she only focused on studying & getting into a good college. She wanted to bag a well paying job to support us financially. She was the light of our lives… But a few weeks ago, she started feeling feverish. We gave her medicine but the fever kept fluctuating & one day, she had a seizure & fainted. We rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with FIRES, a type of epilepsy syndrome which damages the brain. We couldn’t afford to keep her in a private hospital, so we had to make do with another hospital. Her seizures kept getting worse & they had to put her on a ventilator. It’s been 20 days since my daughter’s been bedridden, with needles & pipes sticking out of her body. The doctors say she might not survive without the ventilator. Her dad drives a rickshaw, but he hardly gets time to work now. We have to pay 20,000 rupees for her medicines & 25,000 a day for her bed. We’ve exhausted all our savings & have borrowed heavily from our relatives. Now, we have no money left to keep her treatment going. Each day, I worry if my daughter will ever wake up; if I will get to see her smile again, or hear her tease her sister. Archie misses her terribly, but she breaks down at the sight of her. All I want is for my Richa to come home. I just want us to live as a family once again.” —— Richa’s seizures are getting worse everyday–she’s been put on a ventilator & she needs to be on heavy medication to stay alive. “I’m a labourer surviving on minimum wages. Every morning I wait in line for hours just to get a one day job. After I got married, I thought my husband & I would both raise our kids together & contribute to running a household. Little did I know that I’d be the one carrying the weight of it all. At one point, he stopped working completely. He shunned us & refused to take care of the house. Somehow I managed to fend for us. But with 2 children, a husband & a house to run I was burdened. My odd jobs weren’t getting us by. It kept getting worse until one day my husband left home. There was no discussion, no goodbyes. My moral support became my sons. I had to keep going for them. But our dark times weren’t over- one night my youngest son, got a high fever. I gave him medicine but the fever increased & he became very weak. We took him to the hospital - that's where, after multiple tests he was diagnosed with blood cancer. We had to admit him immediately. It’s been 3 months & we haven’t left this hospital, Manoj cannot live without medial support. He’s only 6 years old & I see him suffer everyday. it’s heart wrenching for me. I have left my older son at my mom’s house & haven’t even seen him since we left. I’ve got no support & no means to sustain. Everyday Manoj asks if his father will come see him. I don’t know what to say. I don’t want him to know that without funds, he won’t live. I want him to be strong, I want him to feel like he’s going to go back home. That he’s going to be able to play with his friends. His dream is to become a police officer. He wants to make all the ‘bad things’ & ‘bad people’ go away so no one has to see pain & suffering. Everyday I am trying to gather funds, I am begging people to help me. I don’t want this to be the end for him - I want all his dreams to come true. And I am going to make it happen for him or die trying.” ------ Manoj is only 6 years old, without our help he has only a few weeks to live.His mother is running out of means to help him.
