The Byzantine Tagmata ➖ Pictured above is an illustration by @jfoliveras depicting an East Roman ("Byzantine") soldier. The Tagmata were one of the two branches of the Roman military for most of the Byzantine period, composed of professional soldiers. They were created in the 8th century AD as a counter-balance for the powerful provincial armies based in Asia Minor, which several commanders had tried to use to claim the throne at Constantinople, the empire's capital. Initially, all Tagmatic units were based there, readily available to the emperor to meet any internal or external threat. --- The Tagmata were divided into several detachments called Tagma, and were composed of both infantry and cavalry, and each numbered at most around a few thousand men, such as the Athanatoi, Excoubitores and Hikanatoi. The most important of the Tagma however were the Scholai, lead by a Domestikos, the most important position in the Tagmata and the man who often oversaw whole campaigns. In theory at least the Tagmata were the army's best troops, with a higher proportion of elite cavalry, but it is also possible emperors valued them more because of their greater political reliability, being closely assigned to him near the capital. --- As mentioned above the Tagmata were first posted around Constantinople, but during the long reign of Basil II (976-1025 AD) they were gradually distributed across the provinces, or "Themes", alongside the soldiers there who formed the army's other branch: the Themata. Basil also created a new Tagma, the famed Varangian Guard, in 989 AD. Ο Οδυσσέας Ανδρούτσος είναι μία από τις μεγαλύτερες προσωπικότητες της Ελληνικής επανάστασης και είναι διάσημος για τις στρατιωτικές του επιτυχίες αλλά και για την τραγική δολοφονία του από τους συμπατριώτες του.  Ο Οδυσσέας Ανδρούτσος γεννήθηκε το 1788 στην Ιθάκη. Ο πατέρας του ήταν ο Αντρέας Βερούσης, ξακουστός αρματολός της περιοχής και η μητέρα του ήταν η Ακριβή Τσαρλαμπά κόρη προεστού από την Πρέβεζα. Λίγο μετά την γέννηση του, ο πατέρας του έφυγε για να ακολουθήσει τον Λάμπρο Κατσώνη αλλά συνελήφθη και αποκεφαλίστηκε το 1797. Η φιλία του όμως με τον Αλή Πασά εξασφάλισε στον Οδυσσέα μια θέση στην αυλή του Αλή Πασά στα Γιάννενα στην οποία είχαν υπηρετήσει πολλοί ήρωες  της Επαννάστασης.  Το 1816 παντρεύτηκε την Ελένη Καρέλη και ανέλαβε την στρατιωτική διοίκηση της Λειβαδιάς και αργότερα της Βοιωτίας, της Φωκίδας και της Δωρίδας . Εκεί ήρθε σε επαφή με την Φιλική Εταιρεία και έγινε μεγάλος υποστηρικτής της επανάστασης. Όταν ξέσπασε η επανάσταση ο Οδυσσέας Ανδρούτσος προσπάθησε αμέσως να ξεσηκώσει τους Έλληνες της Ανατολικής Ρούμελης. Η πρώτη διάσημη μάχη του δόθηκε στις 8 Μαΐου του 1821 στο Χάνι της Γραβιάς όπου ο Οδυσσέας με 117 άντρες ανέκοψε την προέλαση του Ομέρ Βρυώνη.  Το 1822 ανέλαβε την διοίκηση του κάστρου της Ακρόπολης το οποίο ενίσχυσε με οχυρώσεις και εφόδια. Παρόλα αυτά  η μεγάλη εχθρική παρουσία ανάγκασε τον Οδυσσέα να συνθηκολογήσει με μια τακτική που λέγεται «καπάκια», δηλαδή ψεύτικες ανακωχές για να κερδίσει χρόνο. Αυτή η τακτική όμως δεν κατανοήθηκε από τους γειτονικούς αρματολούς προκαλώντας εχθρικές διαθέσεις απέναντι του.  Την Άνοιξη του 1822 κατηγορήθηκε από τον Ιωάννη Κωλέτη για συνεργασία με τον εχθρό γεγονός που τον εξόργισε και τον έκανε να παραιτηθεί από το αξίωμα του αρχιστράτηγου της Στερεάς Ελλάδας και να συνεχίσει μόνος του τον αγώνα εναντίον των Τούρκων. Αργότερα όμως ο Οδυσσέας Ανδρούτσος  σκότωσε δύο απεσταλμένους της κυβέρνησης που υποψιαζόταν ότι σκόπευαν να τον δολοφονήσουν. Αυτή η πράξη οδήγησε στην επικήρυξη και τον αφορισμό του από τον  επίσκοπο Ανδρούσης,  Ιωσήφ. Η επικήρυξη όμως ανακαλέστηκε με την κάθοδο του Δράμαλη και ο  Οδυσσέας επέστρεψε. Παρόλο που δεν κατάφερε να ανακόψει την κάθοδο του Δράμαλη...
