A pianta ottagonale, rivestito di lastre di marmo bianco e verde, è coperto da una cupola ad otto spicchi poggiante sulle pareti perimetrali. Il monumento è il frutto dell'ampliamento di un primitivo Battistero, risalente al IV-V secolo, mentre la decorazione musiva interna risale al XIII secolo. Il bellissimo mosaico della cupola è dominato dall'enorme figura di Cristo giudice con scene del giudizio universale che occupano tre degli otto spicchi. Nei cinque spicchi restanti sono raffigurate le storie del Battista, patrono di Firenze, di Cristo, di Giuseppe e della Genesi. Al centro, nel registro più in alto, trovano posto le gerarchie angeliche. The Baptistery of St. John is one of the oldest churches in Florence, opposite the Cathedral. An octagonal plant, covered with white and green marble slabs, is enclosed by an eight-pillar dome resting on the perimeter walls. The monument is the result of the expansion of a primitive Baptistery dating to the 4th-5th century, while the inner mosaics dates to the 13th century. The beautiful dome mosaic is dominated by the huge figure of Christ Judge with scenes of universal judgment covering three of the eight clusters. In the remaining five the stories of the Baptist, patron of Florence, of Christ, of Joseph and of Genesis are shown.
