The siege at Kenilworth was a testament to modern warfare at the time. The rebellious barons holding Kenilworth Castle not only had stocked the food supplies in preparation for siege but had also obtained siege engines for defense. . King Henry III originally brought 60,000 crossbows and 9 siege engines. But the defenders had longer-range devices and so the King had to send for better weapons. The barons at Kenilworth had held a well-fortified castle through careful planning and a skillful defense. . The siege lasted 172 days, the longest siege in English medieval history, and ended with the surrender of the barons not because of the King’s force but due to food running out and disease beginning to spread. The barons agreed to terms that gave their old lands back through excessive payments. . But… while this siege took place, who was watching? King Henry’s eldest son, Edward who would succeed him as Edward I. . Edward I learnt from Kenilworth and is the king we know both built and destroyed some of the most impressive castles in the UK! I’m still learning and grappling with my own thoughts on over-tourism, but for now I encourage you to get out there in the off-season and wake up early to avoid the crowds because there are still places that you can have practically to yourself if you put in the effort ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The more we are mindful as travelers and choose to visit a destination when it isn't necessarily the most popular time, the slower regulations will have to be put in place that limit visitors to a particular destination.
