Later that day someone asked him, “How many attended Mass this morning?,” and he answered, “There were thousands there—but I only saw three of them.” In other words, in addition to the three early-birds in attendance, the priest was including the thousands of souls from purgatory allowed by God to be present at this Mass, along with a multitude of invisible but very real angels and saints, especially Our Lady, St. Joseph, and St. Michael the Archangel. We don’t see everything that’s going on at Mass, and we would be overwhelmed and amazed if we could. Many deceased persons being cleansed and healed in purgatory are allowed to be present, especially if the Mass is being offered for them, and especially if they had a great devotion to the Eucharist during their lives. Quite often there are priests suffering in purgatory who, through the mercy of God, are allowed to stand behind the altar and concelebrate. I fell in love with St. Thérèse over a few unexpected roses. I fell in love with her parents, St. Zélie and St. Louis Martin, when my cousin climbed a tree for me to take a picture of the Martin’s family garden in Lisieux. . I was only 19 at the time, far from being a wife and mother, but it was then that I realized that without that garden and the parents that walked through it with their beautiful daughters, Thérèse‘s vocation and later canonization may not have been possible. It was there, on that narrow road, watching my cousin hold precariously to the branch of a tree while snapping photos with my camera, I realized in a very specific way this simple truth: as the family goes so the saint grows. . So the Church, in her wisdom, gives us this family of saints. This husband and wife, whom through joys and devastating suffering clung fast to their vocation. They fiercely loved their children, but let them leave the roost to follow where God called them. (That’s no easy task, I’ve learned) . So, I DO NOT HESITATE to ask their intercession. I see through them how God has placed me right here, in this home, where our carpet needs replacing, the two year old wrote on the wall, and the seventeen year old routinely forgets to unload the dishwasher. The miracle is this: that it’s not in spite of but precisely because of these little things that I will find my way to heaven, through the mercy and grace of God. . I’m pretty sure Thérèse wasn’t the first Martin to echo the words “My vocation is love.” . St. Zelie and St. Louis, pray for us! . . . . We interrupt today’s regularly scheduled programming on fertility awareness because...Toby turns one today! Our 24 pound, smiling, laughing, crawling, stick-obsessed, fish-loving, mischief-making boy is 1! And I don’t know how it happened! I feel like I should have something wise and wonderful to say, but I don’t. I’m just so grateful.⁣ ⁣ I am so grateful he is here with us. I’m so grateful God entrusted him to us. I’m so grateful I get to be his mom. ⁣ ⁣ I also am so grateful for his birth parents choosing life. I’m so grateful to our adoption attorney who worked around the clock for seven months to care for his birth mom. And I’m so grateful to the doctors and hospital staff who did everything they could to bring Toby into this world healthy and safe. ⁣ ⁣ The gratitude goes on. I’m so grateful to the friends and strangers around the world who prayed for us and Toby and his birth parents, and who also helped us bring him home. I’m so grateful to the 30+ moms from seven different states who donated milk to feed Toby these past 12 months. I had an appointment today with my napro doctor to talk about a new course of action for our secondary infertility. I have hope, and keep praying “Lord I believe but help my unbelief. Only say the word and I shall be healed.” We have a plan laid out for the next three months. Today is the Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene and I am asking for a miracle through her (and Saint Thérèse the Little Flower) intercession. Saints are powerful. If you’re going through something pick one and ask them to walk with you, to storm heaven with you, to send you a miracle. Have confidence that they will! ❤️
