I used to have the mindset that my body was broken. I loathed it for not working the way I wanted it to. I hated it for making me cry in front of everyone on the first day of dance practice, for making me struggle graduating college, for making struggle working a 9-5, for making grocery shopping the most tiring task, for making travel more difficult, for making me feel isolated. And that self-hate wasn’t doing me any good. Those toxic thoughts lead to the worst thing— passivity. I didn’t take any action, I didn’t write like I do now, I didn’t intentionally take any care of myself which fed to the cycle of me feeling powerless and hence, always sick. I really believe cultivating self-compassion and letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be or what others think, and accepting our situation is really the fire starter for any kind of healing. I’m not saying it’s easy (it’s not) but if you’re going to fight for yourself, you’re gonna have to start with the practice of loving (or at least sorta liking) yourself. Okay but this has been me the past few days. I started having trouble with feeds last week, and I’m down to about 25% of my goal rate. I’m having a rough time with vomiting and pain, and I’m hoping this doesn’t last forever because it’s miserable. Despite having a back spasm I have gone to work this week. I did this because I did not want to do nothing all week. I am tired of doing what my body wants. Yes I listen by relaxing or taking time out every now and again but not every day. I compromised and went work for 3/4 days but left 1-2hours early on each day. Now I refuse to be that person who shows my pain in public so yes there was the occasional groan, the extra quietness and slow movement but there was no complaining. I have started to wonder if management have taken this for granted, not that I want praise or anything. They now have this augmented reality of what pain looks like for me.
