Hey guys! Today we’re talking about FATIGUE. It’s a symptom that a lot of autoimmune diseases have in common, yet it’s so easily misunderstood. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ___⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First off, fatigue and tiredness are NOT interchangeable terms. Tiredness happens when you don’t get enough sleep and can be resolved by (yep) getting more sleep! Fatigue on the other hand isn’t dependent on sleep; we can’t “fix” it by just taking a nap or going to bed earlier. It just is. It also feels different from tiredness: a deep, foggy heaviness that doesn’t necessarily come with the desire to sleep, but little energy to do much of anything. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ___⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For some, fatigue is a primary symptom of their illness and they may experience episodes of severe fatigue called flares. These can get gnarly, guys; in my worst fatigue flares I’ve quite literally not been able to get out of bed or even sit up without help. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ___⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fatigue isn’t a word that gets used much in your average conversation, so to avoid weird looks, we often just say “I’m tired” when we really mean we’re fatigued. I have two thoughts about this: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1) To the healthy crowd: if you’re aware the person you’re talking to has a chronic illness, you might just ask, “are you tired-tired or fatigue-tired?” This question shows a level of thoughtfulness that we don’t get very often, and is much appreciated!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2) To my fellow chronic illness Thrivers: Let’s say what we mean. You don’t have to give your full medical history to everyone, but if you’re talking to a person you love and trust, be specific about what you’re feeling. They can’t read your mind!
