What’s the first thing that comes to mind when I mention “ostomy”? In late 2017 I lost my colon due to severe ulcerative colitis and lived with an ileostomy bag. Maybe you’ve never heard of an ileostomy, or maybe you have many opinions without completely understanding. Or you’re one of my heroes and currently have an ostomy bag. There are numerous reasons why one may live with one. For all of you who have a negative perception of an ostomy bag, I wanna talk to you. And that’s okay, because I did too at once. Having a total colectomy scared the out of me. I was scared of how I was going to look, and I was scared of how this would change my life and limit the things I could do. Let me share a little bit of my story. I received news on December 25th that I needed to go into surgery asap and I cried so hard. But that week God sent a nurse who I’ll never be able to thank enough. Jackie Lopez, you impacted my life forever! Most importantly you described how this life-changing surgery would give me my life back, and you listened and shared your own journey and perspective with embracing the bag and the surgeries to come. I never felt so understood in my life. The first five months of 2018 were very difficult as I learned to adapt. I was in very poor health from months of flaring, too weak to even sit up or walk. Pretty much my mom took care of everything (she’s the best). But at my second chance at life, I started to eat again without blacking out from excruciating pain, began to build up some muscle, and by July I was ready to go into my second surgery. I got to swim in the ocean again, travel by plane, dance, eat foods that I haven’t in years, and experience the freedom to go out without worrying about locating the nearest bathroom!!!
