Psst...Hey interns! Welcome to your first month of residency! Here are some quick Geriatric pearls to keeping granny safe on wards. Hold on to these pearls. 1. Older adults have more atypical presentations. They may not always mount a fever when they have an infection. They may not necessarily have chest pain when they are having a heart attack! Remember that history taking is super important, and explore all angles/differentials before coming to a diagnosis. 2. Medications medications medications! More is not always better for older adults. If there are unexplained/new symptoms, closely look at the side effects of what they are on and see if it can be contributing. Remember when starting new meds, start low and go slow. The beer’s list is a great reference! Use it! 3. Function function function!! Keeping older adults active, mobile and functional is key to their well being! Functional decline can occur as quickly as day 2 in the hospital! Remember to ask about what their baseline function is. Get physical therapy involved early and this will help make sure they are safely discharged to the right place. Get them moving ASAP. 4. When the history is scarce, talk to their family and friends. They can provide valuable insight! 5. Always double check renal function/GFR! 6. They all have amazing stories to share. Listen to them... I guarantee they will be life changing and will make you a better physician Rock on!!! Day 1 of 19th grade ✔️ Starting clinical rotations and being in such a different environment is a breath of fresh air I’m so excited for all the new things I’m going to learn, all the challenges I’ll face and the decisions I’ll need to make for my future in the upcoming year! Hoping this is a year of major growth, #inshallah I know a lot of you guys are International and have been asking about the medical training process here in the US. Unlike many countries that go straight into a medical program after high school graduation, in the US we require first completing 4 years of an undergraduate bachelors degree in any field while fulfilling specific requirements. After taking the MCAT (medical college admissions test), we go through an application process for the medical (MD or DO) programs. This is an additional 4 years. After that, there is an application for residency training that begins with an intern year followed by 2-7 years of additional specialty training. So in total, medical training here is 4 + 4 + 1 + 2-7 = 11-16 years after high school and possibly even more for fellowship sub-specialization! So if you’re counting, I’m technically a 7th year medical student, and possibly not even halfway done with training

Day 1 of PGY-2 year in the books! This month I’ll be working at a State Hospital in Windhoek, Namibia as part of a Global Health Track rotation. From learning cost-effectiveness by treating diseases in resource-limited settings, to honing bedside physical exam and mobile technology (already saw the Butterly probe in action), I can’t wait to see all that this month has in store.

✨“WHY did you pick DENTISTRY? When did you know you wanted to be a dentist?” ‍⚕️⁣ ⁣ ⁣ One of the questions I get the most. HERE’S #exploringmywhy ⁣ ⁣ When I first started telling people I was going to college for dentistry, I got some strange reactions. My driving teacher smiled at me and told me I was going to make a lot of money My mom’s friends asked if I wanted to smell people’s stinky mouths all day and some of my friends told me that ‘dentists have the highest rates of suicide’ ⁣ ⁣ For me, I started shadowing my dentist in middle school but I didn’t fall in love with dentistry immediately. My dad’s an engineer so I dabbled in that, and I had a passion for business so I considered a field in that as well. Thankfully by the time I applied to college I knew dentistry was my path because honestly I would be so bad at anything else ⁣ ⁣ Shadowing at my family dental office helped so much with choosing this field as my future: it showed me the connections I could make with patients, the frantic pace of the office which matches my attention span , and how important hand skills were. I’ve always loved working with my hands since I was young. I would build sheds with my dad or decorate cakes or do calligraphy in my free time. I realized I loved how there was always something going on in the office and I could always talk to people, which is why I gave up engineering/desk jobs as a possibility of a career ‍⁣ ⁣ I feel like everyone finds a different reason to love the career they end up pursuing! For those of you not sure about what career to choose, try shadowing a bunch of different professions to see which one matches you. July 1st... aka FIRST DAY OF RESIDENCY!! So many interns are officially starting their first day today. I have become IG friends with many of you and can’t wait to continue following your journey! As I on the first day I started, 5 YEARS AGO , I can think of a few things I wish my older self could have told my younger self: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ‍♀️ Ask Questions: this is your chance to apply what you learned in med school, AND to learn you don’t already know. . No one will judge/fault you for it! And also don’t be afraid when you need it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Take Notes: this goes hand in hand with asking questions. When you get the answers, or hear something that you didn’t know, . I guarantee you won’t remember everything the first time you hear it, so this will give you a chance to re-read it later. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Carry Snacks: because no one wants to deal with a hangry intern, and because you’re not going to want to be who asks to break for food. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Be Nice: even when you’re sleep deprived, when you’re starving, when you are running on fumes. You what other people are going through, or who you might cheer up with just a smile. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ‍⚕️ Be Confident: You are and (or you wouldn’t have made it this far). It’s ok to be scared, fear keeps us in check, but don’t let it control you. And don’t be too cocky, because that’s when mistakes are made. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ‍♀️ Take Care of : you’re going to be so busy taking care of others that you forget about yourself. '. This can lead to burn out. So eat well, exercise often, enjoy your time off, and plan vacations!
