Today I am showing a different type of work in observance of the first day of National Endometriosis Awareness Month.  #Thisisendometriosis is a project created by @georgiewileman to raise awareness about endometriosis and the multiple, often unnecessary, surgeries that are performed for it.  Too frequently, people with endometriosis are subjected to repeat operations that usually create further damage and pain.  By dating and connecting the scars spanning my two operations, I am collaborating with Georgie and many others to show the extent of endometriosis and the ultimate failings of our healthcare systems.  With an average of 7 - 10 years for diagnosis, I endured 17 years of pain prior to my first operation which only left me feeling worse.  Excision surgery with an endometriosis specialist is currently the best treatment for this incurable disease, but it is not very accessible to most.  This is unacceptable.  Swipe for instructions about how to join the campaign.  To read more about my experience with endometriosis, head to the link in my bio. . . . . . #endometriosis #endo #endometriosissupport #endometriosissurgery #endostrong #endometriose #endometriosisawareness #endometriosisawarenessmonth #calltoaction #protest #healthcareadministration #chronicillness⁣ #chronicpain #documentaryphotography #photoessay #photostory #photodocumentary #documentaryphoto #invisibleillness

“From the brief period of time that the bus dropped us off at the terminal outside the city to the time we took our first ride towards the city centre, we started getting a hint of the immensity and intensity of Karachi. The wideness and chaos that characterises this megalopolis is noticeable from the very first moments you step foot into it. People from all four corners of the country are represented in Karachi. The diversity of the city is significant. There is a sense of passion and a source of pride amongst the locals in saying that they are from Karachi. Throughout our stay we made unexpected encounters with the locals, it was amazing to note that the city’s entire population is twice that of our entire country; Belgium. One of our most memorable and fun encounters in the city was when we came across a jewelry called “Belgium diamonds”. Seeing our excitement and curiosity while standing outside his shop, the store owner invited us inside. We had some great conversations with him over a cup of chai and learnt about his links to Belgium. The hospitality of Pakistanis never fails to amaze. While walking around the Old City we learnt a lot about the city’s tolerance and openness to different communities. There were all sorts of religious buildings in the area, from both Catholic and Protestant Churches to Mosques of different sects, even a Zoroastrian fire temple. The accessibility to the seaside was truly a breath of fresh air. Watching the sunset over the Arabian sea is both a relaxing and magical experience. Karachi has many different types of beaches, from the chaotic ones that feel like a constant party to the more quieter and isolated ones located outside the city. The food is utterly delicious. Every type of cuisine can be found in the city, from sea food to vegetarian Bun Kebabs. The food scene is happening in Karachi. Karachi is a vibrant city that captivates you and that is sure to move you.” #touristsinkhi

NOAH ADDIS [@noahaddis]... According to United Nations estimates, there are a billion people living in slums and informal settlements--one out of every seven people on the planet. This number is expected to grow to three billion by the middle of the century. While informal communities may outwardly appear to be ruled by chaos and disorder, they are in fact very organised places that grow almost organically to suit the needs of the people who live in them. For this series of photographs, I have traveled to cities throughout the world in which a significant percentage of the population lives in informal settlements. I have focused on the landscape and architecture of these homes and communities in order to show the creativity and resilience of the people who created them. Housing is a basic human need that we all share. I am interested in exploring the similarities and differences among self-built homes and settlements across the globe. The world’s squatters exist in a legal vacuum, working outside of the official economy and living with only tenuous rights to the ground on which they have built their homes. City governments often choose to demolish these settlements in an attempt to impose order on the urban landscape. This approach frequently contributes to a cycle of poverty and decay. Residents have often told me they are less likely to invest in improving their homes and businesses if they are in constant fear of eviction. People living in informal settlements have very specific needs, including a pathway to property ownership, access to credit and financial services, education for their children and basic services, such as clean water, sanitation and electricity. Many of these needs are not currently being met as cities struggle with ways to deal with a rapid influx of rural migrants.
