I love a lot of things about Pre-K, but dramatic play is definitely one of my favorites! When I first began teaching, I thought dramatic play was JUST a kitchen set. Not every play experience is a hit around here. Take this music shop, for example. ⁣ Frustratingly, even as I was setting it up I was thinking to myself 'this won't work' but decided to give it a go anyway. The kids love playing shop and they love music, what's not to love?!⁣ ⁣ My aunt is a great teacher and I remember her telling me when I was still at University that dramatic play needs to be relevant to the children expected to use it. Play is a child's way of making sense of the world around them and their experiences. It was her voice in my head telling this won't work - I should have listened! A toddler who has never been to a music shop won't know what to make of it. The shop sat untouched for four days. ⁣ ⁣ Yesterday I swapped the instruments for the supermarket resources and my kids were playing with it before I'd finished unpacking the box. They took turns being the shop keeper, they understood the products and had reasons for buying them and practised language they've heard adults use. It made sense to them because it was familiar.
