Almost one year ago, on June 10th, @nicolehughes8 and I became accidental advocates for water safety when we both endured a parent’s worst nightmare...we lost our babies to drowning. Since then, we have partnered with the aap @healthychildrenaap along with many other incredible organizations to eliminate this preventable tragedy. In an effort to protect parents hearts and families futures from enduring one of life’s unthinkable events, we continue to spread awareness. Stew and his wife Kim lost their toddler, Stewie, in a drowning accident more than 30 years ago. May Is Water Safety Month. To help prevent this tragedy from occurring in other families, the Leonards have raised more than $3 million dollars to support free or low-cost swimming lessons for children through the Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation, named in honor of their late son. “May is Water Safety Awareness month and we use this time of year to remind parents that drowning is preventable. And yet, drowning is still the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children,” says Kim Leonard, co-founder of Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation. “Our family hopes that our foundation’s message will make this a safe and enjoyable summer for all.” To help spread their water safety message, Stew and Kim have written a book Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim, which has been used to support drowning prevention and water safety programs by fire departments, children’s hospitals, and police stations throughout the nation. There’s also a board book, geared to children age 3 and younger, as well as a Super Stewie Safety Toss mobile game. On Sunday, we celebrated our annual Girl Scout cookout. After Levi died, I stumbled through the fog, trying to envision the life ahead. Our decision to give Lily and Reese the childhoods they deserved solidified for me that I would still lead Troop 106. In fact, Lily asked me in July if I would still do Girl Scouts. At the exact same moment that my heart answered “absolutely not,” my mouth actually said, “Of course!” And, so I did. {Disclaimer: Pretend play with my kids feels just the tiniest bit* like torture to me. So, when Lily was 5, I had to find a way to offset my mom guilt and spend time with her in a way that did not involve Barbies or elaborate tea parties with me as the only guest. I needed an end goal, a more purposeful use of my time with Lily. Girl Scouts has fulfilled that for me. This was my 5th year, and with this new baby girl on the way, I guess I’m going to be trying to avoid pretend play, I mean leading Girl Scouts, for a while…}. *tiniest bit = actually more like “of the highest magnitude.” This year, we baked bread in a bag in Daisies, went horseback riding in Brownies, became detectives in Junior Scouts. We hiked, problem solved, crafted, and ate snacks. I wish I could say it was always fun, but the truth is the Girl Scout meetings were hard. Levi came to meetings with me since I was pregnant with him. He came as a newborn baby, as a silly 1 year old, as a wild 2 year old. This year I wasn’t trying to bribe a little boy with gummies or tripping over tiny wooden cars. Yet, the meetings felt infinitely harder. I’m glad I stuck with it, though. I proved to myself I could survive them, even when I felt his loss so acutely during every one. I feel lucky to have such special girls in our troop and love watching them grow. Childhood innocence and delight can be a powerful balm for grief. We are inching toward the one year mark of June 10, and TimeHop makes me panic. I feel desperate in these last days- if we somehow avoid the one year mark, maybe I can snap my fingers and get Levi back. But, I can’t stop June 10 from coming. What if I had known last year that my little boy in overalls had so few days left with me? I just miss him.

Levi’s birthday is March 13th. He was born on a Friday the 13th, and I had already planned his 5th birthday party as a haunted house theme (since it would fall on an actual Friday the 13th). He will never turn 5. He did not get to turn 4. I couldn’t bear to post this video last week and as I type these words, I wonder if I have the strength to share it now. It is excruciating for me: his excitement and pride and little boy voice saying- “It’s mine birfday.” I want to run into it, scoop him up, and keep him safe. Dear God, I just want to keep him safe. How could I have known his 3rd birthday would be his last? The anger is so real. I can hold onto hope and choose to see the good all day long, but none of that gives Levi the life he deserves. Perhaps some day I will find comfort in the thought of Levi celebrating in Heaven. But, the very last place a boy should be on his 4th birthday is in Heaven. He is not 95 years old. He was 3 years old when his childhood was stolen from him by a silent killer I didn’t even know was on the loose. My husband said it best: “Drowning doesn’t happen to the parents. It happens to the child.” Heartache and regret will be our lifelong companions, but this isn’t about us. Drowning happened to Levi. He was an innocent victim and drowning snatched away his chance to turn 4, vanished his Paw Patrol birthday hats in the snap of a finger. We made it through his birthday, because we didn’t have any choice. Just 2 days later, my husband and I flew to the AAP meeting, summoned our courage, and along with Bode Miller, shared our stories with a room filled with pediatric leaders. The timing is not lost on me. On Saturday, we should have been holding Levi’s party; instead, we stood in a room of respected physicians and made an urgent plea that we work together to stop this epidemic. The new policy and drowning prevention toolkit were released. We could practically feel the shift in the room, as grief and hope stood side by side. I will never stop missing my son. I will never stop wishing I had seen him slip out the door that night. And, I will never stop yelling from the rooftops that drowning happens to real kids. #missyoualwayslevi
