I was only going to give up alcohol for a month, but I wasn't prepared for the impact it had, writes @GuardianAustralia columnist Gay Alcorn in this bravely honest piece. . "It took me a few years to grasp it, but alcohol was controlling my life to an extent that I found it hard to hide, even to myself," she writes. . "I drank to pretend that my life was more interesting than it was, to escape from everyday problems, and because I enjoyed it. Or maybe that’s self-justifying crap. Maybe it’s just that alcohol is an addictive substance like all of those illicit drugs we demonise and, over the years, I had become addicted." . No to things I wanted that deep down inside I knew were not good for me. No to toxic relationships I was hanging onto, that were stuck on repeat. No to feeling like I had to do whatever everyone else was doing it. No to fitting in just for the sake of fitting in and being liked. No to comparing myself to others. No to always settling out of self-doubt. No to agreeing to things out of fear and insecurity. No selling myself short. No to that voice that would whisper “One drink can’t possibly hurt, you will feel better, I promise, just once”. Sobriety taught me to separate the thoughts inside my head that were constantly leading me astray. It taught me that thoughts are just thoughts. That they are temporary. That they change. That they are the result of my beliefs, my environment and my behaviour. And that in the long run, with persistent effort, I have the ability to shape my thoughts. My thoughts create my feelings. My feelings create my behaviour. And my behaviour reinforces my thoughts. I had to break that toxic cycle no matter how uncomfortable or agonising it was. And I did. I knew if I was strong enough to say no to alcohol, the thing I craved most at that point in my life, reshape my thoughts around it and how I perceived it, I was strong enough to say no to everything else that wasn’t in my best interest. By learning to say NO to so many things, I was finally able to learn to say YES to the things I’ve always wanted to say yes to. Yes to health. Yes to healthy relationships. Yes to kindness. Yes to my values. Yes to myself. Yes to my goals. Yes to life. Yes to finally living. Decide what kind of life you actually want. Decide what kind of person you want to be. And then say NO to everything that isn’t that. ❤

Tune into @theprojecttv tonight, I’m chatting with the hosts about alcohol and the role it plays in our society... #dryjuly #banthebinge #theprojecttv #sjchome

In a 2007 study published in The Lancet, psychiatrist David Nutt convened two groups of independent experts to rate the addictiveness and harmfulness of 20 different drugs. Alcohol came in 5th. Cannabis, LSD and ecstasy didn’t even make it in the top 10. (Swipe right to see the top 10 most addictive and harmful drugs.) But somehow, alcohol gets a pass like no other drug. There is no other drug that is encouraged to be consumed the same way alcohol is. Yet, It’s alcohol that kills 1 out of 10 working-age adults. It’s alcohol that kills more than all other drugs combined. It’s alcohol that is responsible for 1 out of 3 road traffic fatalities. It’s alcohol that plays a role in 40 % of violent crimes, and in almost 50% of sexual assaults. In the US alone, the yearly financial burden of alcohol is estimated at $249 billion. Just to put that in perspective, the total yearly US federal education budget is around $60 billion. We’re in an alcohol crisis. But I guess our society has been in this crisis for so long that we don’t consider it a crisis anymore. It’s just the norm. I’m not campaigning for prohibition. But the solution shouldn’t be to wait for people to reach rock bottom and send them to rehab. We need more awareness; on addiction and mental health. More easily accessible information. More research on the brain and human behaviour. More solutions and preventative measures. More sober role models. More books. More movies that showcase sobriety positively. Stricter marketing and labelling laws. Easier access to help. Less judgment and less stigma. I think the world is slowly changing in this direction already, and I’m so excited to see where it’s gonna go.
