There are quite a few amazing and inspiring ladies putting out new music lately - one of my favorite new discoveries is Yola, who released her debut album Walk Through Fire last week via @easyeyesound. I’ve been spending a lot of time with this record, and love it more and more with each listen. Yola plays her own brand of country soul, coming to Nashville via Bristol. Although this is her debut, she’s spent more than a decade honing her craft to prepare herself for this moment. Dan Auerbach heard her and wanted to work with her - he produced the record and co-wrote most of the songs with her and other collaborators. If I hadn’t told you that you’d probably realize it anyway, as it’s pretty easy to hear his production style in the music. The list of players on the album is a serious Who’s Who list - Dan Auerbach, Gene Chrisman, Stuart Duncan, Ronnie McCoury, Charlie McCoy, Russ Paul, Billy Sanford. We’re talking some of the best country session players ever, and that’s just a sample. The list of instruments played is also wonderfully long - the lush instrumentation is one beautiful aspect of the music. There is a certain maturity to Yola’s voice that is immediately apparent. She has such great control - she pushes and pulls back at just the right moment. Her voice is soulful and powerful, without ever being too dominating. Everything about the record is effortless. The showstopper is a track called “It Ain’t Easier.” I think it has the perfect blend of the country and soul aspects of her sound. Lyrically, it’s such a smart take on perceptions and assumptions about relationships. Also she kills it vocally on this one. The album reflects on the simple times, the hard times, the good and the bad things you go through in life. Other standout tracks I’d suggest checking out are “Faraway Look,” “Walk Through Fire,” and “Love All Night (Work All Day).” I’ve seen many comparisons of her to Dusty Springfield - high praise which I completely agree with. I can’t recommend Yola and her spectacular debut, Walk Through Fire, enough! Have you checked it out? If not, ya better change that!
