Our blood flows through our vessels like a tornado. A vortex that is mildly helped by the heart as a pump, and primarily related to the heart as an electromagnetic oscillator. Trois États de la côte ouest des États-Unis - la Californie, l'Oregon et l'État de Washington - ont décidé de faire sécession et de construire, dans un isolement total par rapport aux États-Unis, une société écologique radicale baptisée Écotopia. Vingt ans plus tard, en 1999, Écotopia ouvre pour la première fois ses frontières à un journaliste américain, William Weston. Celui-ci décrit dans ses articles envoyés au Times-Post tous les aspects de la société écotopienne. Quant à son journal intime, il révèle la transformation intérieure qui se révèle peu à peu en lui. Ce récit utopique a été publié en 1975, traduit depuis dans le monde entier et vendu à plus d'un million d'exemplaires. Dans Ecotopia, Callenbach met en place une société utopiste en tous points : l'énergie propre, l’urbanisation, le recyclage, la démocratie participative, les salaires plafonnés, l'horaire de 20 heures de travail par semaine, les études pluridisciplinaires, l'égalité homme-femme... La manière hyper libérée d'aborder la sexualité relève clairement quant à elle du mouvement hyppie. Il est à souligner que ce roman est alarmiste sur les modes de consommation de la société américaine dans les années 1970. Callenbach, à l'époque, mettait déjà le doigt sur des situations extrêmement problématiques à l'heure actuelle, telles que l'utilisation du plastique ou des énergies fossiles. Il serait urgent de s'inspirer du modèle de vie des habitants d'Ecotopia afin de vivre en harmonie avec la terre et avec nous-mêmes. "Le bonheur des gens ne dépendait plus de la domination qu'ils exerçaient sur toutes les créatures terrestres, mais d'une coexistence pacifique et équilibrée avec elles."
