The funerary mask of Merit is an awesome exhibit at Museo Egizio in Turin. The music that accompanies the artifacts adds another dimension that I haven’t seen or experienced before. I personally felt you were really observing someone’s intimate belongings, intrusive in a way, and maybe wishing it had been left untouched, but then thankful that they will live on for eternity in the museum. Definitely worth a visit...probably best Egyptian Museum in Europe for the general public! A portrait by @felixkunze of John and me at @the_explorers_club annual dinner in March. I wear a 1930s style dress, with a true vintage velvet cape from @shopmorphew; John wears a true vintage 1920s tuxedo from @vintagevirtuosa. In a classic ballroom shadow pose, the pleated chiffon of my dress—reminiscent of ancient Egyptian pleated garments—billows out, evoking an aspect of the ideal ancient Egyptian afterlife: the body freed from mummy bandages, reunited with family, and enjoying the “sweet breath of the north wind.” As Sety I says in a text for his father Ramesses II: "“He is as a god—When he travels the Netherworld, the Sun shines for him in the dark place, that he might uncover his face and doff his dust, the North wind whistling before him." The ba-soul of the deceased (depicted as a human-headed bird) could travel forth during the day, hence the original title of the Book of the Dead (the one that we really should all be using): the Book of Going Forth By Day. Like the sun god descending into the Netherworld, the soul of the deceased would reunite with the mummy in the evening, that union providing one mechanism for eternal resurrection. Also key was engagement between the living and the dead—texts in tomb chapels were not just for decoration, but were intended to be read by the living, addressing future generations visiting the tombs. During annual festivals (like the Beautiful Festival of the Valley in Thebes), families would feast at tomb chapels, those of this world and the next essentially partying together. This interaction across what we so often perceive as an impermeable boundary could be formalized by letters addressed to the dead and written on offering bowls. When we see mummies, tomb goods, and the myriad remains of ancient Egyptian funerary culture, we should see not a fixation on death, but rather an obsession with a good life continuing forever. Even the ancient Egyptians could express doubts about what the next world holds, hence the New Kingdom exhortation: “Make a holiday!” #truevintage #1930sdress #1930sstyle #mensvintage #vintagetuxedo #egyptologist #egyptologists #ancientegypt #vintageglamour #oldhollywood #vintagelove #vintage

The ancient Thebans called the year 1087 BC, the twelfth year of the reign of Ramesses XI, the “Year of the Hyena,” a time when famine gripped the city. Such dire circumstance led to civil unrest, and in an attempt to calm the situation, Ramesses XI sent the Nubian general Panehesy and his army to Thebes. After military conflict with the High Priest of Amun, Ramesses sent another general south, and following widespread war and destruction, Panehesy fled to the south, but retained control of Nubia (more on all this to come). Deprived of access to the rich gold mines of Nubia, the government of the early Twenty-First Dynasty (following the death of Ramesses XI) turned to a new source of wealth, an event that lead to one of the darkest corners of Egyptian history. Butehamun, important official with the community of royal workmen on the West Bank of Thebes, had a house within the enclosure wall of the mortuary temple of Ramesses III, then recently ravaged by the civil war; amazingly, the stone columns of part of Butehamun’s house are still standing, and on these columns Butehamun recorded unique titles, such as “Overseer of the Treasury of the Lord of the Two Lands (the Pharaoh) in the Place of Truth.” The “Place of Truth” is the ancient name for the Valley of the Kings—and the only “treasury” in that area is fantastic wealth within the New Kingdom royal tombs! Butehamun was a state-sanctioned tomb robber who with a small group of assistants systematically cleared the royal tombs of their mineral wealth. The officials removed all precious materials, stripped the coffins of their gilding, and even unwrapped the mummies to access the amulets among the bandages. However, Butehamun and his co-workers did everything they could to mitigate the desecration of the divine kings—the coffins were carefully re-painted and short texts record the date of their re-wrapping. The mummies of the New Kingdom pharaohs in their new, simpler coffins were deposited in two final resting places.
