My husband’s berry patch has finally sprung to life, and today we picked the first strawberries of the season. We ate our fair share and then whipped up some of our Healthy Strawberry “Cheesecake” Frozen Yogurt popsicles with the rest.
These pops are super simple to make and are deliciously creamy thanks to @stonyfield YoBaby yogurt.
The plain YoBaby contains no added sweeteners (and only Certified Organic ingredients), which gives the popsicles a little added tang for that real cheesecake taste. Baby G was in her glory!
Head to the #linkinbio for the full recipe and to find out our favorite popsicle molds. #ad #stonyfield #healthykidsfood
Is your baby ready to start solid foods? And I'm not just talking finger foods or BLW style, I'm talking anything other than breastmilk or formula! The best way to know is to look for these signs of readiness. They will generally show up around 6 months, but some babies a little before, and some even a little after.⠀
⠀
Hands down the most important one is sitting unassisted, especially if you will be serving your baby finger foods (which you should, even if you don't do an actual BLW style of feeding, we want all babies to be exposed to finger foods fairly early on!) It can be a choking risk as well as cause issues with them actually being able to eat properly if they aren't sitting unassisted. Scroll back a bit in my profile for my post on the importance of sitting for details!⠀
⠀
The other signs are all important in their own way, but there are definitely some that your baby might not show. That's generally ok, as long as they're sitting. The one almost false indicator, like I've indicated in the picture, is babies being interested in your food. Around 4 months, most babies become interested in the world around them. It's not necessarily specific to food, just that they're noticing things in general! So definitely don't start feeding your baby just because they show this sign. You want them sitting too, and showing the majority of the rest of the signs.⠀
⠀
There is new research that is leading to new recommendations for allergen exposure, and it is starting to lead people to question whether we should go back to introducing foods earlier. The recommendations are that if you have a baby that is high risk for food allergies (namely immediate family member with an allergy, severe eczema, or previously diagnosed food allergy) then you should work with your provider to potentially introduce foods between 4-6 months. If your baby is not in the high risk category, the recommendation is to start with allergen introduction at 6 months, which fits right in with these developmental markers.⠀

it's #nationaldoughnutday and to celebrate, I'm sharing the recipe for my Spinach and Oat Banana Donuts (see below ) which you've probably seen me make a zillion times for Luca over on @inspiralizedkids (usually as muffins.) the truth is, is that every time I make a batch of these for his breakfast, I secretly hope Luca doesn't eat all 6 of them (which, 90% of the time, he does!), so that I can have them as a snack later in the day they literally take 25-30 minutes to make from start to finish and require just a blender and an oven, so cleanup is minimal you can find the recipe on my blog or below - and these work well with any leftover veggie you have, Luca had them with beets this morning, but also loves them with carrots and butternut squash. if you struggle with getting your little ones to eat veggies, MAKE THESE!

.
Spinach and Oat Banana Donuts
Makes 6-7
.
Ingredients
.
1.5 packed cups baby spinach
1 ripe banana
2 large eggs
3 tablespoons rolled oats
1/4-1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

.
Add all of the ingredients into a blender and process until smooth. Pour the batter into the donut cavities (or muffins) and bake for 17 minutes (23 minutes if making muffins) or until the donuts/muffins are firm and browning on the edges. Pop out of the cavities and enjoy!.

❇️
❇️
I shared my recommendation about not tying babies to the high chair, and we could see different experiences in the comments. It is true that there are cases in which the baby should be tied, but a recommendation that is valid for everyone is to take the baby out of the chair immediately when you see signs of sleepiness
*
This seems to be very funny because there are videos that are viral in which babies' are nodding in the chair ♀️. Let me remind you that a piece of food can go to their throat, and because they are tired, they will not react the same.
*
Do not let kids sleep in the chair please! Could you share with another mom or dad or grandma that needs to know this information
Are you frustrated that your child isn’t eating what’s served? Do you feel like it’s a lost cause? Hope this post helps put your mind at ease , motivates you to play the long game, and get you fired up about EXPOSURE! ⠀
⠀
I’m using as an example. I lost count how many times (>20) I offered before C decided to actually eat it⠀
⠀
➡️ Even when the food gets ignored, simply seeing it takes the newness out. The next time they see it, they’ll go, “ooh! I know you!” Now, it may continue to get ignored for awhile, but if you stop offering, then you’ll miss that chance of when they do decide to give it a try⠀
⠀
➡️Playing - touching, smelling, tearing it apart, crushing, throwing…you get the idea. So frustrating to see as parents (don’t let them sense this!) but this is actually really great stuff! Let them explore till their hearts’ content!⠀
⠀
➡️ Tasting - kissing, licking, putting on the tongue, spitting it out…the tongue has the tastebuds so even though food doesn’t get eaten, your child still got exposure to the flavor. That’s HUGE! Repeated flavor experiences help promote the willingness to eat a variety of foods⠀
⠀
➡️ Eating - involves chewing and actually swallowing. Hallelujah! the food finally makes it into the belly. For those of you who are just beginning their #babyledweaning journey, C didn't eat much of anything until about 2.5 weeks into starting. And this is quite normal and to be expected. But he was doing a lot of tasting! So don’t be too concerned and continue to provide plenty of opportunities for them to explore food!⠀
⠀
❤️To sum, yes the end goal is for the child to actually eat the food but don’t rush the process! Food left on the plate is NOT wasted. All of these scenarios count as exposure, and you’re winning with every.single.one of them. Would you tag a mom who might find this helpful?⠀

Possibly the best quick snack for your little teething baby :) 10 minutes to make, fill up a bag when they are frozen and amazing for a go-to quick snack. It's just yogurt and fruit! PLUS a whole lotta love ⠀
.⠀
1 ripe banana⠀
1 teaspoon vanilla extract ⠀
10 strawberries, hulled ⠀
125ml Greek yogurt⠀
.⠀
Add the banana, vanilla and strawberries to a blender and blend until you have a smooth purée.⠀
Pour into a bowl, add the yogurt and mix well. (Do not blend the yogurt as it will make the mixture too runny.)⠀
Cover a plate with cling film. Pour the mixture into a piping bag and pipe little drops of the yogurt mixture onto the cling film.⠀
Put the plate into the freezer and freeze until drops are solid. Peel them off the cling film and keep in a covered container in the freezer.⠀

My favourite way of serving veggies for both me and baby is hands down roasting them! I can't tell you how much easier I find it to throw a big batch of any veggies I have on hand and have it cook in an almost completely hands off manner. PLUS, roasting brings out a naturally sweet flavour in veggies that no other method does (hello picky eaters). PLUS PLUS, they make for great leftovers. PLUS PLUS PLUS, roasting maintains their nutrient content a lot better than boiling or even steaming (don't stress about this too much though), and being able to coat them in a healthy fat means extra calories and nutrition in every bite. Nuff said. Roasted veggies for the win ⠀

Strawberries are pretty much the perfect summer fruit, and they’re full of vitamin C too! So they’re perfect to serve with those iron rich foods to help with iron absorption. But just how can you serve them to babies so that they’re safe?
I’m showing you one way in this video! As you can see, the key is that to serve it whole, you want it to be large and soft! As in they can squish it between two fingers, just like all other foods need to be for your baby. If you look closely, you can see that he is gnawing off bits of the strawberry, and everything that he is getting off is basically smooshed soft small pieces. No choking hazards here!
We’re lucky that we have an amazing strawberry stand right down the street from us that picks their berries every morning. Meaning they’re always just perfectly ripe like the one in this video. If you’re buying your strawberries from the store, it might be a different story. Many of them are picked before they are ripe so that they ripen by the time you buy them, but that means the aren’t always very soft. So what to do? If you can’t find ones that are this soft, you have two options. One is to find a decently soft one and cut it into long thin strips. They obviously won’t be finger length, but you want to cut them lengthwise so your baby has a better chance of eating them around their fist. Second option is to defrost some frozen ones. Frozen are a great solution as they are extremely soft, but you do lose some of the fresh flavor.
I’ll be showing in my stories a bit later today a close up of the softness you’re looking for, so make sure you join me there!
The biggest thing to keep in mind, softness is key! When they gum something you want it to smoosh, not remain a hard piece!
