The warm weather we’re having this winter is throwing my brassicas into wanting to flower. The ole ‘I’ll come back for you guys later’ number isn’t cutting the mustard in this weather. They still taste great and the colour is spectacular. Plus when the heads aren’t so tight it makes it easier to see if I’m about to eat a slug so really it’s a win all round

So happy with my Carrots this year - by far the best year I’ve had with them (only took me 4 years to get it right ha). I said it in a previous post but I give them the sunniest spot in my garden and I know that’s part of the reason they have done well. A good rule of thumb I read once and have always remembered is ‘if you grow it for the root or the fruit you need full sun. If you grow it for the leaves, partial shade is all you need.’ I also always direct sow seeds. Carrots really don’t like being transplanted so, if you can, direct sowing is definitely best and give them nice loose soil and space to grow

V is for variety and vegetables! I have grown a variety of vegetables, flowers and fruits this year and can’t wait to grow even more next year. A few veggies I’ve grown in my first year have incuded: carrots, potatoes, parsnips, peas, mangetout, rhubarb, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. I’ve really made up for last years appalling pepper harvest with this years bounty. The last of the plants are out and I’ve stripped whatever was left on the plants. My fridge is currently inundated with peppers and broccoli. I feel like my harvests are either all or nothing at the moment

Willing them to ripen! Some of my tomatoes are looking so full and juicy, but others have started to split already. Any tips to prevent this?!

Out of all the things I’ve grown this year, these oyster mushrooms are probably the most exciting! While I’ve grown many accidental mushrooms over the years (always clean out your fridge before going away, folks ), these are my first intentional mushrooms! I’m really interested in growing mushrooms and think they’re such fascinating little things. I’ve been talking to a lot of people recently about how to grow them. When I asked Rochelle of @the_mushroom_house_nz a few questions, not only was she ridiculously helpful, she kindly offered to send me a bag so I could try growing some myself. It’s been such a cool process watching them grow, and they’re so unbelievably delicious that I have serious concerns that I’ll never be able to enjoy bought mushrooms again Does anyone else grow mushrooms? I’ve ordered a book from the library, and I’m hoping I’ll be able to do a mushroom growing course later in the year so I can start growing lots of my own
