I like this #earthship home design. The building sits in an earth berm on the north side to capture the constant geothermal temperature of the earth, which is around 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Then it has a beautiful south facing greenhouse wall to capture the warmth from the sun and light for the plants and inhabitants, which will bring the temperature up to 60-70 degrees. The adobe style construction on the east and west side of the house utilizes the clay that was dug up to create the berm and serves a thermal mass to store the warmth from the greenhouse wall. Earthships are designed to be hand built with local and recycled materials to make them affordable. This house uses a solar hot water heater, solar panels and water capture to make it a renewable autonomous unit. Add a garden, fruit trees, nut trees, chickens and maybe some other animals and you have a beautiful self sustainable homestead. @tierracascadia

Our hats are off to @stevenbaczekarchitect for his recent contribution "Air Sealing Basics" ... or should be say "Air Sealing Baczeks"? Always helping train the trades. To this article he brings three amazing training illustrations: Visualizing stack effect. As warm air rises inside a typical home, the pressure changes from inward pressure (infiltration) at the bottom of the building to outward pressure (exfiltration) at the top, with a neutral pressure plane in the middle. Because the pressure increases with the distance from the neutral plane, the top and bottom of the building are the most critical for the air barrier Red line test. The key to a successful air barrier is *continuity*. On any section drawn through a building, it should be possible to follow the air barrier around the entire perimeter of the building envelope with a red pen without lifting the pen from the page Three-dimensional thermal bypass checklist. This one's my favorite. Many organizations have published lists of areas in a building that are likely to challenge the air barrier.
