This week team Breathe paid a visit to our residential project Black Street to witness an air tightness test take place. Air tightness is a major component of Passive House, a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building. Along with our clients, we’re big believers in reducing a home’s ecological footprint. The team was on site to see the “blower door test” - this happens when all the membranes, windows & doors are in but before the wall lining is applied, so that any leaks can be prepared prior to lining. Hemp blocks are by far the most ecological way to upgrade your existing structures. By combining hemp blocks and bricks we see vast improvements to the brick structures thermal mass properties and U-value. Bricks are already energy efficient because they hold sunlight throughout the day and release that energy after the sun goes down. The breathability of hempcrete keeps the brick structure dry, adds extra insulation and thermal mass ensuring energy efficient walls that create a healthy internal environment by helping to prevent common problems like mould growth and dampness. By adding as little as 90 mm of hemp blocks to a 230mm brick structure (internally or externally) we are seeing improvements in wall U-value of up to 75 %. These results are amazing and because our hemp blocks are bio degradable there is no landfill or waste, meaning a carbon negative retro fit that’s good for you and the environment.
