. . The 2019 Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists have been released by the Environmental Working Group so I wanted to share these saveable graphics with you for your next trip to the grocery store! Although it is ideal to buy organic whenever possible, if increased cost is an issue, these lists can be helpful guides. The fruits and vegetables on these lists represent those tested which contained the highest amounts of pesticide revenue (Dirty Dozen) and the lowest amounts (Clean Fifteen). Please share as these can be difficult to remember and they can change from year to year. What percentage of your fruits and vegetables do you buy as organic? How important is that to you?

As we come up on berry season, a few things to note. Berries have thin skin so it’s important to ask your local farmers if/what they are spraying the berries with or purchase organic to ensure minimal pesticide exposure. According to @environmentalworkinggroup’s reports the last several years, strawberries are the most likely produce item to be contaminated with pesticides and other poisonous chemicals. Even when purchasing organic, it’s still important to wash your produce. With berries, I soak them in a bowl with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (acv). Then I drain (you can rinse too, if you taste the acv) and store in the fridge. This way my berries are ready to roll when I want a handful. A couple of days ago I drew up the #dirtydozen, which outlines the 12 fresh foods that contain the most pesticide residue when grown in the industrial system. This list tells us which non-organic fresh foods have the least amount of pesticides. Hopefully having these illustrations will help you when you're next buying your food. Local and organic is always best, because we love supporting our small food producers and avoiding food miles and packaging. Harvesting from the apple tree down the street, helping your friends in their garden, volunteering at the community or school garden or signing up to a veg box scheme are all great ways to get chemical-free food for a low price. Foraging weeds and trading with friends are my personal favourites.
