Gav of @timorous_beasties prints every other section then goes back and prints alternate space to fill complete repeat without smudging. Hand held driers speed up drying process. Each color requires new screen. Laborious and worth the effort. These handmade, exquisitely designed textiles are the best. In the 17th century silk screens were being used to transfer ink to fabric. Marigolds✨✨✨✨✨ ✨I have been having so much fun learning and teaching natural dye processes over the past few weeks. This is a silkscreen that has been printed with thickened mordants, and then dyed in a pot of simmering marigolds. The aluminum mordant creates the bright yellow, while the iron mordant creates the dark brown. I am infatuated with this process, and really look forward to integrating into my printmaking practice as I learn more. . . My teacher, Christina Roberts, gave me the marigolds, grown and harvested by her mother, for a workshop I was teaching at Saul Agricultural High School here in philly. Three years ago, when I first moved to philly, Norean and I lived in apartment rented by the Fabric Workshop. When I opened the freezer, it was filled with frozen marigolds! Now I know The bright yellow and the lovely floral smell of the simmering marigolds makes me ache for spring. And the high school students liked the smell too! Some of them wanted to try making marigold tea to drink! Flowers. I can never get enough. When I imagine my concept of crossing over into the afterlife, in my mind I imagine being reunited with my beloved dog Sunshine, running over sun-filtered hills and fields of wildflowers and trees and butterflies to greet me and take me to my mother and grandmother, waiting for me amongst the most beautiful gardens. I oftentimes channel my mother and my grandmother through my paintings. People who knew my mother or grandmother say to me “that painting looks like your mom”, or I feel “grandma in this painting”. I think that is sometimes why it can be sad for me to let go of certain paintings.
