Are you living with a plain pasta only kid?
⠀⠀
You’re not the only one!
⠀⠀
I get questions about how to add sauce to pasta almost weekly.
⠀⠀
Mixed foods can be tricky for kids with any sensory involvement to their autism - the different textures and even tastes can be a lot for the body to manage!
⠀⠀
The key to overcoming the plain pasta preference? Slow exposure. (Sound familiar?!)
⠀⠀
Start with tiny dips. Your kid doesn’t even have to eat it! Just have him dip and wipe...and maybe eventually lick it off instead? (It’s always helpful to have napkins around for getting rid of unwanted foods!)
⠀⠀
Many little dips overtime can give way to a mixed plain pasta and saucy pasta plate until you’ve got a sauce-eating superstar on your hands.
⠀⠀
My autism nutrition program is perfectly designed for kids with limited diets who have trouble trying new foods. If you’re ready to change your child’s diet and get through meals without meltdowns, sign up for a FREE coaching call with me via the link in my bio to see how my program can help!

Which utensils is your kid using right now? You can let me know below. What is the right age for food picks? When can I start them with chopsticks? Are these things dangerous?⠀
~⠀
I always opt for "supervised" and "early". Kids desperately want to learn to use tools like this. It keeps them at the table and can keep them interested in veggies. So, I give them tools that are a challenge for them. Ones that they have to learn to use. ️⠀
~⠀
⚠️Safety note: your kiddo is safe to use food picks once they are not putting all small non-food things in their mouths. We started food picks around 3, when the kids went to preschool. ⚠️⠀
~⠀
I consider utensils to be non-life threatening. I don't mind if my kids poke themselves, because that's a valuable learning experience. Better they poke themselves early with a toothpick, than "poke" themselves later with a knife. Buuuuuut, use your judgement if you have a sibling situation. I would not offer toothpicks if one sibling might try to attack the other sibling(s). ⠀

(I have been trying to post this all day long...something was wrong with my Instagram so anyways..I guess it works now)
Today was PT day and Miss Michelle wanted to do some feeding therapy and Vera never wants to close her mouth fully so she wanted to try this special tape used for this exact purpose! Vera did better keeping food in her mouth a little but she also loves spitting it out, so feeding therapy didn’t last long ♀️ lol but I had to take a couple videos because she is just too cute with her tape lips #verarose #downrightperfect #heartwarrior #feedingtherapy #morealikethandifferent #downsyndromeawareness
Which side looks more familiar?
Okay, I do use the term picky, but to be honest, most of the eating behavior that you share with me and most of what I see in my practice isn’t pickiness - it’s problem feeding.
Typical picky eating tricks don’t work for eating struggles that aren’t typical.
I offer a program designed specifically for your problem feeder. Kids begin to expand their diets in as a little as 1 week!
What’s holding you back from getting the support your child needs to eat better?
Sign up for a FREE introductory call with me via the link in my bio to help your picky eater (or problem feeder) try new foods and expand his/her diet without a meltdown

Early Intervention SLPs frequently teach parents to target language skills during play, but it turns out we should consider incorporating feeding routines into our caregiver training as well.
To learn more about differences in Infant Directed Speech across play and feeding scenarios and to find out the advantages of targeting language during feeding times, check out our Early Intervention review "Infant Directed Speech: Not just for play!" at #linkinbio

Her eyes look extra big when she’s happily licking a strawberry.
I got a glimpse of some new white tooth buds in the back and she’s super grumpy so I suspect some teeth are coming in full force.

every week elle has eight different therapists who pour into her. I’m not going to lie, it is exhausting for both of us. between her therapy schedule and her nap schedule there is little time for anything else in our days. but watching these women love on her and watching her love them in return is such a precious gift. we are blessed with the best team of special “friends” *

Around 1 yo, some kids get scared of new foods. That’s good - we don’t want them eating plants in the yard. But they also won’t eat lettuce. ♀️ That’s okay, we just need to take the new out of it!⠀
⠀
Serve it a lot. Expose them to it over and over and over. Fun fact, a new study just came out - it looked at all the studies that have researched “food exposure” since the 80’s. What did it confirm? Exposure works. ⠀
