Good excuse for me to use some more of my orange essential oil (although not completely necessary) since I like to talk about hormone health I’ve also going to talk about something I learned about today: hormonal headaches can sometimes actually be caused by low iron post menstruation. On a budget? These foods should be on your list! This information comes from Dr. Fuhrman’s aggregate nutrient density index (ANDI), which illustrates which foods have the highest “nutrient-per-calorie density.” In other words, these are the most nutrient-dense foods per calorie! Unlike food labels which only list a few nutrients, the ANDI scores are based on 34 different nutritional parameters. Foods are ranked on a scale of 1-1000, with the most nutrient-dense being your cruciferous leafy green vegetables. To find which of these foods are the most “bang for your buck,” I divided each food’s price-per pound by its ANDI score, to get a “price per ANDI point” for each food. There needs to be a shift in the conversation from calories, MACROnutrients, and choosing packaged food that boasts labels such as “low-fat” and “sugar-free,” to talking about and emphasizing MICROnutrients and nutrient-density from wholesome foods. Many of those that adopt a standard American diet (SAD) are missing out on the consumption of micronutrients – vitamins, minerals, and many other phytochemicals – that are exclusively found in plants and are ideal for optimal health. These bioactive phytochemicals are what give these fruits and vegetables their bright pigment and flavor, and are apart of the plants defense system. The more phytochemicals we consume, the better our body is able to combat oxidative stress, decrease inflammation, and protect our gut. So how can we incorporate these foods into our diet?
