'It’s very hard to care for my mum. Watching her fade away breaks my heart. I get frustrated with the whole situation, but I have to tell myself that it’s not her fault and if I’m feeling like this what must she feel like? We have good days where she’s laughing and joking - they make it all worthwhile. As long as I can, I will care for my mum.’ . ‘Where did the idea for the doll and moses basket come from? Mum kept asking where the babies were, and kept cuddling one of my daughter's teddy bears, so I thought I'd try her with a doll and see how she reacts. Today we’re wishing a very happy 90th birthday to Bob, who’s living with dementia! Bob’s granddaughter Brooke wrote in to share this brilliant photo, and to give Bob a heartfelt tribute for the big day: ‘Grandad Bob is the heart of our family. He has been married to his wife Ellen for 69 years, and we all love him lots! He gave us our family motto: “In our family we like smiley faces" and he definitely always has one! 'My mum is in her 12th year with Alzheimer’s and sadly for the last two and a half years has been bedridden, but I’ve still managed to keep her in her own home which I know is what she always wanted. My mum has a favourite puppet, which helped out enormously when she was refusing medication and food - she would take it off the puppet’s hands. I have now collected about 70 puppets and visit dementia care homes with them , to bring a smile makes me feel fantastic! I’ve lost an awful lot from this illness as my dad also had it as well. Over the years it’s brought tears and laughter but more importantly life isn’t over after diagnosis. Yes it’s difficult , challenging and life changing but it’s the biggest reward of all caring for someone with it . My mum has just started eating ‘proper ‘ food again after over two years of living on practically high calorie yogurts which has been amazing.
