To all the parents out there struggling with their own mental health issues, this one is for you. . I have anxiety and bipolar disorder (type 2) and spend a lot of my time in a mixed state, dealing with a combination of extra energy and depression. I talk with my therapist weekly about really trying to understand the nuances of my moods and their triggers and it’s really a nasty web of guesswork. I know that sugar makes me angry and unbearable, and the need for 8 hours of sleep and a schedule (and to-do lists) are crucial for my sanity and success. Another thing we talk about at therapy has to do with how my moods affect those around me, specifically my wife and kids. . Like any parent, I lose my cool with my kids sometimes. Like an irritated, depressed hypo-manic, I lose my cool with everyone else that I love more than I’d like to admit. I try my best to keep it together with them but by the time they are finally asleep I’m either 1) exhausted and off to sleep myself or 2) so fried and tired of dealing with people that I’m asshole to my wife and in-laws (we live in a multi-generational household.) . How affectionate are the autistic individuals in your life? If you are autistic, how do you feel about affection, either showing it or being the recipient of it? Some people with autism may not like to be touched and others might touch too much (my son is a serial ear grabber) and some may not have the words to express these types of emotions but I’d bet most are aware of and probably respond well to affection when presented the right way for them. . There’s more than one generation of people who believe that autistic people aren’t, or can’t be, affectionate, either emotionally or physically. Yeah, the same generations that believed institutionalization was the best way to support autistic individuals ‍♂️ I’m confident that many of you will confirm that your kids are actually very affectionate it, although they might show it slightly differently. . Today we got to explore Chicago’s @fieldmuseum on a school field trip. This guy was calling out dinosaur names just based on seeing their skeletons, it was incredible! We’re also working on classifying them by which part of the Mesozoic Era they lives in. We saw lots of mammals and some birds and the only thing that got him worked up was the Underground Adventure exhibit, he was scared to death of the oversized pincher bugs haha. Quickly grabbing his headphones and talking him through the moment helped a little but it took a little bit for him to calm down and be okay with taking off the headphones.
