My sweet boy. He always struggles near the end of the school year. But this time is harder for him as he will be heading to middle school next year. I can hear the anxiety in his voice when he says he doesn’t want this year to end. It’s going to be a big change for him, one we will all have to navigate together. Thankfully he has a huge support system in his classmates that will be with him as they all move up. But he has definitely increased his chats about how sad he is for this year to end. I once read not to become friends with your kid’s therapists. I thought it was foolish advice and still (kind of) feel the same. It would make the break-ups easier but I think therapies are much more fruitful with a more intimate relationship, beneficial to both child and therapist. Rock and a hard place? . One of our most beloved therapists has moved on. Found a steady 9-5 and I can’t blame them for making important life changes. What hurts is knowing how big of a loss it is for my son. This was one of his homies, one of his best pals. They played, learned, laughed and hung out - all in the name of therapy and support. They spent at least 16-20 hours a week together for probably the last 6 months. I can’t imagine having that rug pulled out from under my feet. . To my son: I’m sorry you didn’t have a say. I’m sorry we put you in this position, vulnerable and trusting. I know it’ll all work out in the end but that doesn’t make it any easier right now. It’s okay to feel sad and upset and even angry. .
