Alex likes these signs that have popped up throughout our town. He said having autism makes him different and he sometimes feels less. To all of our friends you are so much more... more resilient, more loyal, more trustworthy, more reliable, more truthful, more caring, more creative, more hyperfocused, more unique, more in the moment, more in sync with the finest attention to details, more passionate, more able to recall from long term memory, more interesting, more fun, more authentic, more intuitive, more extraordinary and in general more awesome... could not be any further than less. If I left anything out, please let me know. ✌+ ~Lisa

My hearing is the most sensitive of all my senses. My vision is sensitive too, and both cause me physical pain, but noise is more omnipresent than bright lights, so I react to it more often. Before a meltdown, my brain latches onto & amplifies various, seemingly innocuous noises in my environment. Noises that are quiet and far away become excruciatingly loud. I don't think the acute sensitivity disappears during the meltdown, rather it's masked by my own crying/ screaming, and sometimes hitting (SIB). . . Autistic people frequently engage in SIB (self-injurious behavior) during meltdowns, because pain is the one sensation that is prioritized above all others in the brain (it's an evolutionary thing- if you're hurt, it's the brain's first priority to focus on that to make sure you survive). Since the brain has to pay attention to the pain of SIB, it can no longer pay attention to sound, light, or emotion. So, SIB is a way for autistic people to minimize the distress they feel because of environmental stimuli, because pain is so effective at drawing one's attention away from the other senses. However, SIB can be dangerous, so autistic people need to be able to develop coping strategies that achieve the same result: distraction from environmental stimuli. . . The replacement that helps me the most during SIB is squeezing things, being squeezed, or other forms of intense deep pressure. Some autistic people like to hold or chew on ice cubes, or shred pieces of paper. I think the latter two options are good if the autistic person is having a meltdown alone. However, the overwhelming majority of my meltdowns so far have been around friends and family members. In those scenarios, deep pressure is the most effective and easily accessible option. (I'll continue this in the comments, since I have one more paragraph to write but it's too long for the character limit) ~Eden #autism #autistic #autismspectrum #autismacceptance #autismawareness #actuallyautistic #redinstead #neurodiversity #neuroqueer #autismspeaksdoesntspeakforme #aspergers #aspie #autisticselfadvocacy #autisticpride #autismpride #sensoryprocessing #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorysensitivity #stimming

So, so important. This is probably the thing holding the most people on the spectrum back right now...probably more so than nutrition. We can’t expect kids (and adults) to thrive when they’re on the Ipad 12-16 hours a day. It’s crushing them. It really gives so much reinforcement with them not having to do anything. This just teaches them to zone out, not to speak, interact, etc. Parents really have to step up and limit screen time, find interactive things for them when they are using their devices, etc. Everything is learned at home. We can’t expect them to do much of anything in the community when they’re doing this 24/7 at home. Take 2-3 weeks, change the routine, and you can eliminate years of issues from this. These issues don’t go away on their own. The nice thing is the new routine eventually becomes the normal routine. ✅ #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #specialneeds #autismmom #disability #ability #inclusion #health #wellness

Not going to lie. This is a huge struggle getting him to use his new communication device at the moment. I will not be entirely negative and say this is going to be this way forever. This is just what’s happening now. For the little time Gabe is home he wants his other iPad. The one he uses for Youtube and spelling games. It’s a form of stimming. Everything seems to happen so fast from the time he wakes up and then he’s out the door to school. Same thing when he gets home, he wants the other iPad. Then he has the stomach issue after that and soon after it’s time for bed. When I try to get him to use this device he gets so very upset it’s not safe to withhold the other device. I have been so overwhelmed with everything this week. Thanks for letting me vent and for all the positive feedback. It helps a lot. #fortheloveofgabe #spectrum_inspired #autismspeaks #touchchat #aac #nonverbal #autism #autismawareness #autismadvocate #autismacceptance #autismmom #specialneeds #specialneedsmom #specialneedsparenting
