Hyoscyamus albus inner seedpod case and seeds. This is smaller than the tip of your pinky finger. The pitting in the seeds is not as noticeable in actual size. Henbanes are heavy seed producers and ancient people’s who used them for medicine and ceremony purposefully cultivated them for seed production. . The leaves were a common smoking herb before tobacco was discovered and imported from the the New World to the Old where tobacco was first called “Indian henbane” and often confused with henbanes. After tobacco was introduced, the leaves of the two plants were blended together and smoked until present day. . The seeds, leaves, and flowers all have the same percentage of tropane alkaloids, but the root does not and is not used medicinally. Henbane and its close cousins have always had a wide range of important uses —even today it is a commercial crop for big pharma. It is mainly harvested for its scopolamine content for a variety of important medicines from antinauseants for NASA astronauts to the CIA’s infamous truth serum (yes it’s real and it’s scopolamine, also present in all datura and brugmansia species, and the handy side effect is amnesia). . Medicines derived from henbane species also have the potential to help with the effects of chemo therapy, to treat anxiety and panic attacks, to manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s, lupus, and Lyme disease, and to help restore libido loss. This is what 5am looks like for an ethnopharmacology nerd with a snotty nose, insomnia, and chronic foot pain. Does anyone else put a little ointment on their nose, the sinuses under the eyes, and the temples when you’re all stuffed up? Just a teeny bit. Medicinal nightshade ointments are anti-inflammatory and anticholinergic which in theory would help with a runny, inflamed nose as anticholinergics dry up body fluids (one of the reasons they’re used for surgery). “The Long Trip: A Prehistory of Psychedelia” by Paul Devereux is a good, accessible read. Those ancient Scythians knew how to party! Gold bongs, hot box tents, drinking home brew from the beautifully decorated skulls of your enemies... . The chapter on witches’ flying ointments is short but one of the better and more grounded surveys I’ve read. The author doesn’t get carried away in the sabbat imagery, but instead takes the reader through a timeline of evidences and sources taking into account the context of torture around witch trial confessions. He does seem to believe in spirit flight himself, referring to it many times as “night travelling” and dates it to a min. of two thousand years ago. Devereux essentially states that a night traveller is not a witch but witches can be night travellers and the two have been equated since we’ve had folk and fairy tales. . Night traveller, I like that. It sounds somehow less new age than dream walker, lucid dreamer, and astral travel... Nightshades for night travelling anyone? The photos shown are two versions of the same book by renowned American ethnobotanist Charles Bixler Heiser. The green one is the older hardcover version (sometimes with a black dust jacket with henbane flower ) and the blue one is the newer, unabridged paperback. I recommend going with the blue one for all the extra info in it.
