Neuromuscular Training
——-
Neuromuscular training can be defined as training/exercises that address our bodies ability to control our muscles/joints to improve dynamic joint stability. This is a huge part of not only rehab but also injury reduction. I incorporate neuromuscular rehab into every session and many patients are often surprised at just how challenging a simple forward bound or single leg jump can feel. This is particularly the case with chronic injuries or when an athlete is booted/casted for a lengthy amount of time. I always do this on both sides to not only address the athlete as a whole but it also serves as a comparison between the affected and non-affected side.
——-
Here are a couple of foundational exercises I use when the athlete is ready for single leg landing. I would expect my athletes do be able to confidently perform these foundational exercises. I do not want to see major discrepancies between the two sides. Overall, I’m looking for quality:
1️⃣ Trunk control - meaning no leaning forward or to either side
2️⃣ Hip control - meaning minimal rotation
3️⃣ Knee control - meaning minimal valgus
4️⃣ Ankle control - meaning minimal supination or pronation
5️⃣ Visual compensations - I always want them looking forward and not relying on their vision for stability

Post comments on what kind of things you’re seeing between her right and left side. Which side is the affected side?

Imagine: you’re sitting in a hospital exam room, just weeks before high school graduation. The test results come back positive. “Friedreich’s Ataxia,”, the doctor explains, “is a rare, genetic neuromuscular disorder. Your body doesn’t produce enough frataxin, which means your control over your muscles will slowly deteriorate, leaving you unable to walk and with a shortened life expectancy.”⠀
⠀
After a moment, you ask, “Well, what can I do?” ⠀
⠀
“At this time, there is no treatment or cure,” he replies, and leaves it at that. In other words, nothing.⠀
⠀
Nearly 8 years later, I can tell you that’s not entirely true. True, there is no treatment or cure. However, there are plenty of ways you can work to improve FA’s effects on the mind and body, and be involved in advancing research of FA.⠀

If you could have something, anything, that would make your life a little bit easier what would it be? If you have FA or some other type of disability or chronic illness, you’ve probably had grand ideas for new inventions or impossible wishes; at least I have. For example, I’ve always dreamt of a device that immediately transfers my laundry from the washer to the dryer (so I don’t forget), or a way for my water bottle to always be filled. ✨
⠀
⠀
Something I’ve struggled with is deciding if I need a walker or a wheelchair. You see, I use both. I’m dependent on both. However, I’m not at a point where I’m willing to give up walking. Although my balance is dreadful, I can remain upright and walking. I feel confident and love stretching and moving my legs.... until my fatigue hits. For longer distances, I need a wheelchair.⠀
⠀
⠀
Some outings were physically, mentally, and emotionally draining; I would second guess my choice of mobility aid. If I was walking, I sometimes wished I had my wheelchair and could be pushed. When I was being pushed, there were moments I wished I could get up and walk.⠀
⠀
⠀
So, when @rollzint reached out to offer me a Rollz Motion, a rollator and wheelchair in one, I was elated. It’s a rollator (similar to the one I use, daily) that easily transforms into a transport chair. I’ll write a more in-depth blog post soon with my honest review, but so far, I cannot say enough about the design.⠀
⠀
I took it out a few weeks ago to shop, and go for a *walk* in the park. It’s perfect, because I could cover a lot ground while being pushed, but then still have my freedom and independence while browsing around @zara . Swipe right to see my rollz in wheelchair form, (and me pretending it’s spring in Columbus and that I’m not freezing.) xx⠀ ⠀

Not much to be said here when it comes to muscle strength (swipe for the visuals). If these don’t jive with you or you have more information, please share with us in the comment section!
