Today I used my cane outside of my apartment. We walked Lois in an area with less people, while Kirk occasionally sang Willy Wonka songs to make me smile about the cane. Ya know the song? “Come with me, and you’ll be, in a world of pure imagination...”. I’m shocked what a huge help it was. I didn’t make eye contact with a single person. I have a really hard time accepting this is where we’re at in this journey. But regardless, I’m really really really really proud of myself. That’s all. ✌ #chronicillness #chronicpain #endometriosis #endometriosisawareness #adenomyosis #adenomyosisawareness #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy #pelvicfloordysfunction #babewithamobilityaid

Today I went back to pelvic physiotherapy for the first time since excision & it’s official, my pelvic floor (PF) is as dysfunctional as the rest of my life. Yay for me. . I waited until now to go back for a number of reasons: 1. At my post-op appt, Dr Sinervo told me my PF was fine, not dysnfunctional & to tell my PT she had done a great job. 2. Recovery has been slow & difficult & I’ve been scared to go back & add fuel to the fire with post-session flares. 3. I haven’t been able to work in a year so things like PT, therapy & massage actually become more of a “luxury” (even though I consider them needs) when funds are tight. . Anyway, as you guys know, I’m a firm believer in pelvic PT & went once a week for the 6mths between laps last year. . Getting the thumbs up from Dr S about my PF made me think I would be ok not going back to PT after surgery, but I was wrong. I have definitely regressed & I can tell. . I have knives up my vag & butt all the time, sometimes can’t even sit, sex is painful again, my bladder’s incomplete emptying is getting worse & I’m just in more pain. . We did a lot of internal work, focused on breathing & started new exercises. I’m going back in 3 weeks to begin working with dilators to help with the painful sex aspect of it all & hopefully she’ll have more answers for me regarding Valium suppositories for the immense pain. Oh & she also told me to get the @ohnutco ! . A reminder to myself & others: whilst meticulous EXPERT EXCISION is the first step in addressing endo properly, it cannot be expected to reverse years, sometimes decades, of damage alone. This is why pelvic physio is important. The muscles in that area are so used to tensing due to severe pain, it can result in Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, so we need to learn how to RELAX the PF & other abdominal muscles (which over compensate for PFD & can cause referred pain to the diaphragm etc.) instead. . Even though I was super anxious about going back to physio, it was a great appointment & super refreshing to have another person back on my team. . If you’re suffering from endo & haven’t yet tried pelvic physio, I highly recommend you do. . Last reminder: KEGELS ARE THE ENEMY!

My @tedxlsu talk about Rethinking Postpartum Care will be out on video in just a few weeks! Our American Healthcare System is not adequately supporting women and mothers. Our babies, careers, relationships, pelvic floors and quality of life are suffering because of it. As a mom and a medical professional I have witnessed how there is such little support for families after giving birth. We are pretty much sent home with a pack of diapers (for the baby and the mom) and a squeeze bottle and are told- see ya in 6 weeks As pelvic health PTs, we are working hard to change this. We are seeing women preconception when planning for pregnancy, during pregnancy, in preparation for childbirth, a few weeks postpartum to assist with recovery and months and even years down the line. Postpartum is forever. It’s never to late to get help, support or therapy. We offer sessions in our New Orleans clinic AND online to women across the world. Pelvic Heath PT should be accessible to everyone, everywhere, and we are working hard to make sure that is the case! . . #thevaginawhisperer #postpartum #postpartumbody #postpartumrecovery #pelvicfloor #pelvicfloordysfunction #pelvichealth

M A N A G I N G P R E S S U R E That’s what it is all about folks! Good abdominal work is about managing IAP or “intra abdominal pressure”. How do you know an exercise is safe and appropriate for your body? It ALL depends on how you manage the pressure that is naturally created during ab work, lifting something heavy, coughing, sneezing, etc. If you see your tummy pop out or “cone”, practice your core breath and connect to your deep TvA and pelvic floor muscles before moving on! If your belly popped out during the cough test, try engaging your pelvic floor and core before coughing and see if that helps! Don’t try the cough test when pregnant - it won’t be accurate! These moves are best for #postpartumfitness and beyond. Here are 3 great deep core moves to try. Swipe to see all 3 videos! ➡️ NOTE: you can do these without the ball under your tailbone, and omit the arms for an easier version. ❤️ 1) DEAD BUG: inhale prepare, exhale engage core/floor as you reach opposite arm and leg long. 2) OPEN BOOK: inhale open arms and legs, exhale draw in and close. 3) HEEL TAPS: inhale prepare, exhale engage core/floor as you reach opposite arm and leg, tapping heel to floor.. . Leggings by @loveandfitshop! For more, check out our online video programs for pregnancy, postpartum and core challenge beyond!
