ACL Rehab - Quads ——- Regaining quad contraction and strength is a huge component in rehab regardless of what stage you’re at. I’m often surprised at how people present when they come to me from other facilities. The quads (in addition to range of motion) sets the foundation for rehab. In the immediate post operative phase, I encourage my patients to perform quad sets hundreds of times a day. One of the primary indicators of being safe to return to sports is having 90% quad strength as compared to the non effected side. This by no means reducing the importance of hamstring, glutes and calf strength. ——- Here are two quad exercises I like to use in rehab. 1️⃣ Banded split squats - using the band as an external cue, I’m emphasizing active knee extension as she stands all the way up. 2️⃣ Terminal knee extension - you’ll see her heel is elevated placing more emphasis on the quads. Regaining FULL active extension is a must. ——- There needs to be formal education on ACL rehab which is why I started an ACL Mastermind Group. It’ll feature video content on ACL rehab and will he a continuously growing database of assessments, movement breakdown, exercise breakdown, case studies, and exercises. Banded shoulder exercises —— Weakness in the shoulder is a potential reason why someone has pain. Getting the shoulder stronger in addition to restoring mobility is usually a good place to start in rehab. I like utilizing bands as they’re effective in challenging the shoulder and easy for patients to due at home. These types of bands are relatively cheap and can also be used to hip exercises. —— Here are a few examples of banded shoulder exercises: 1️⃣ Shoulder reaches - one side if performing an iso hold while the other reaches against the band. 2️⃣ ER iso with scap retraction and protraction - the external rotators are holding the band isometrically while working on scapula retraction and protraction. 3️⃣ Banded ER - can’t forget about actively working the external rotators which are crucial for overall shoulder health. —— Tag someone who would appreciate this post! Foot Core Training Part 2 ‼️Progression from our last post‼️ Activation of the abductor hallucis has been shown to be over 4 times greater during short foot exercise compared to towel curl exercises in sitting and unipedal standing. Short foot exercise can be performed in progression from sitting to bipedal to unipedal position followed by functional activities such as squats and single leg hops. Increasing evidence shows that training the foot via short foot exercises improves foot function and balance ability. Tri Pod Stance Progression We like using two weight plates for our athletes as cueing to maintaining arch support The two plates will be placed at the toes and the heels. This cueing forces one to maintain an arch support. Once the tri pod stance is achieved then progress to single leg hopping in all directions while maintaining neutral arch. McKeon, Patrick et al.
