The Mohican 100, mine halted in an instant. I had a plan, and it was working. Nutrition and pacing were on point. The course was challenging, with rocks, roots, and lots of climbing for the Midwest. But I like all that and would chose it over pavement any day. I think I’m actually better suited for it. Then a serious storm rolled in and stuck around for the night. Those of us that continued were drenched in rain without relief for 10 hours. The trails were flooded and water flowed downhill, fog set in, and the rain didn’t let up. Stop moving and you start shivering. Nothing mattered more than taking the next step. I was 78 miles into my 100 mile redemption race and running hard through the campground at the end of my third lap in Mohican State Park. Finishing was all I had left to do. After almost 24 hours of running, I was closing. The rain had nearly stopped and the sun was beginning to rise. But then then I fell. Not because of a root or rock, it wasn’t the mud or flooded trails, I didn’t crash into a tree, and I didn’t fall off a cliff. But I slipped in the grass on something you can barely call a hill. One leg went forward, and with the other bent underneath me, I landed hard. Immediately I knew I would not be bouncing back up. A medic was sitting in his truck and saw it happen. He hurried over and took care of me, cleaned and wrapped my ankle, but let me know it was sprained and was going to hurt if I wanted to continue. Of course I was going to continue. I moved slowly and painfully for a couple more hours until time ran out, and I missed the cutoff at 81 miles. . . This one stings. I had broken through all the physical and mental barriers. I made the best of each opportunity I was given. I could smell the finish line. But instead of a finisher’s buckle, it would end with a ride back to town. . . Thank you to everyone for the support and a big thank you to Matt for running nearly every step of this race with me. Next up: another round of physical therapy, not for my IT band- which seems to be holding up well, but for a swollen ankle that can hardly bend. Let see if we can get it working again and go crush the Burning River 100 miler in six weeks.
