✅ Recently I’ve been seeing a lot of posts in this Insta Community about Low Carb eating causing insulin resistance. I’ve got some personal views that may cause debate but here goes...
•
I’ve been T1D for 21 years. I read Dr Bernstein’s book The Diabetic Solution 2 years ago and it changed my life. I lost 15kgs. My HBA1C dropped from over 10 to in the 6’s and I started eating low carb... At first I was strict with Dr B’s numbers. 6g carb for breakfast, 12g carb for lunch and 12g carb for dinner. I’m now not so strict and eat around 50g carbs per day.
•
I’ve worked really hard for the past 2 years. I’ve gone to the gym daily, really watched what I’ve eaten, tested my sugars religiously and worked on surrounding myself with positivity to reduce stress in my life...
•
I’ve just been away for 3 weeks travelling and made a decision to eat whatever I wanted. I felt like I earned it after working so hard. But all the carbs ended up not being worth it. As Dr B says, bigger the numbers (aka carb intake and insulin dose means bigger chance of sugar fluctuation). Oh boy, was I back on that “sugar roller coaster” again!! It was horrible. Mentally I was feeling pretty blah by the end of the trip plus the weight gain!
•
So my thoughts on low carb causing insulin resistance Of course it does...IF that’s the way you look at it. I look at our bodies as cars. Carbs = PETROL and Protein and Fats = DIESEL. If you are feeding yourself “diesel” aka low carb and decide to put “petrol” aka high carb food in your tank, well of course your body ain’t going to like it. It’s use to one fuel source. Most cars that accidentally put petrol in a diesel car break down instantly. •
I saw it first hand these past 3 weeks my “insulin resistance” by eating all the carbs. But I don’t look at it as a bad thing. My body has asked to give it “diesel” and I have to understand this.
•
BUT Low carb ISN’T for everyone even with T1D and this is where all the confusion is happening. It’s all scientific but some people are born to run off carbs, others are not. I highly encourage you to do everything you can to work out what “fuel source” you thrive on which will ultimately give you stable sugars ☺️

Évidemment c’était très important pour moi de créer une collection de stickers pour l’ensemble.

So today I got given the best news ever......After 4 years or close monitoring of my maculopathy/retinopathy at the eye hospital (Diabetic eye condition), I have been DISCHARGED!!!! Something I never thought was even possible! Turns out my retinopathy has reversed slightly and is now not a cause for concern!!!! I am over the moon and even shed a tear of joy! Ever since being referred to the eye hospital as an outpatient, my outlook on Diabetes changed dramatically. It shocked me into changing my habits to slow down the possibility of losing my sight. They told me the damage was irreversible and could only stay the same or get worse, but I managed to defy all odds Take it from me, a healthy diet, exercise and being mindful of diabetes control is so important. Do not ignore it, whether T1 OR T2! Control will never be perfect, but as long as we do the best we can to control our diabetes, that’s all that matters! ❤️ #nationaldiabetesawarenessmonth #whatdiabeteshastaugme #diabetestype1 #highbloodglucose #diabetestype1 #fitness ##diabetestype1 ##fitfam #diabetichealthcoach #type2diabetic #personaldevelopment #type1diabetic #diabetes #diabetic #diabeticproblems #freestylelibre #freestylelibreabott #freestylelibreabbott #sensor #librefreestyle #type1diabetic #type1diabetes #type1 #t1 #t1d #training #bloodglucose #bloodglucoselevels #bglevels #fitfam #fitness #health #healthy #bglevels #whatdiabeteshastaughtme
So...this pic pretty much sums up my week I had some news that I wasn’t expecting and wasn’t good I also had a week of close friends also experience some nasty stuff. There seems to be some ‘heavy’ energy in the air?! Maybe it’s a full moon thing Seriously just trying to keep my Instagram account as real as possible... T1D has taught me that life holds no mercy for anybody. Anything can happen at anytime! Good, bad, indifferent. How we react is up to us. If you feel like having a big cry if something bad happens to you, I say go for it! But please, for your own sanity, take a big breath and do what you need to do to find a way to keep moving forward. Type 1 Diabetes has put me on the biggest spiritual journey this past year. I guess when you’ve been diagnosed with a disease that requires your attention 24/7, how can you not question all types of situations life throws at you? What I have learnt is the reason life isn’t ‘easy’ all of the time is because we are meant to grow continually as humans. We are put in situations that are meant to grow us and take us to the next level. If we got everything we wanted today, I actually believe we’d all be pretty bored and sick of our lives in a months time. I say embrace the highs and lows. Look for the lesson life is trying to teach you I hope this helps anyone going through some heavy stuff at the moment. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to know what feeling alive is really like
