Genuflection. What is it and why do we do it? . . Simply put, we genuflect to show reverence to God, who we as Catholics believe to be present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist and kept in the tabernacle. . . To genuflect is to show reverence and deference to someone we believe to be greater than ourselves. It’s a physical cue to the one genuflected to and to all those around to say, “Hey, this Person is extremely important and deserves our respect.” . . In the old days I believe for a bishop and a king, you genuflected on the left knee. (Although now it seems it may be done on the right as well. Possibly because it became confusing.) To genuflect on the right is reserved as a sign of adoration and therefore for God alone. . . I see many times that people wander into Catholic churches and they don’t genuflect. And honestly, I don’t think it’s because they don’t care about God. I think it’s because they don’t know that they should, that they’re supposed to. I feel that it’s such a beautiful outward sign that shows that God is truly present in the Holy Eucharist. So if you aren’t genuflecting already, now’s a great time to start! And the next time you go to church maybe with a friend who doesn’t know or isn’t Catholic, let them know why you’re doing it. They’ll probably ask you.
