Bent arm strength is extremely helpful in catching your balance. These drills will also give you the arm/core strength needed for arm balances.
Drills :
- Chaturanga holds 3reps x 5 sec each
- Around the world chaturanga both legs
- Crow -> chaturanga -> push up repeat X3

4 Eagle Leg Handstand Drills

I love playing with this variation! .

2: Tripod Headstand with eagle legs. (Only if you already have a headstand practice) Lift your legs up into a straddle. Cross your right leg over your left wrapping your legs into eagle and then unwind and try the left. This will help you to get used to moving your legs while trying to balance. Do not allow your shoulder blades to sag towards the floor or elbows splay to the sides! .

3: Place your hands shoulders distance apart and about 5-8 inches from the wall. Kick up into handstand. Wrap your legs into eagle. Notice how you need to shift more weight forward to counterbalance the weight of your legs. Also notice how you now have a lower center of gravity and it may actually be easier to find balance. Use your fingertips gripping the floor to keep your weight slightly more forward than usual. .

4: Turn around and climb the wall for a belly facing wall eagle. Start on hands and knees with your head towards the center of the room. Spread your shoulders, firm your arms to straight and then walk your feet up the wall. Keep your eyes focused between your hands. Keep your left leg straight, bend your right knee and cross it over your left knee. Bend both knees keeping the ball of your left foot on the wall for balance. Tuck your right foot behind your left calf. Pull your navel and ribs in. .

5: Lie on your back with a foam yoga block between your hands. Reach your arms overhead and wrap your triceps towards the tip of your nose. Spread your shoulder blades wide on your upper back. Inhale and as you exhale curl up. Pull your belly button to the floor, do not allow your lower back to arch away from your mat. Straddle your legs wide. Wrap your legs into eagle. Unwind and try the other leg on top. Try for 5-10. .

KEY POINTS
1. In the straddle press, legs are wide which allows their weight to be more over the hands. In the pike press, legs are behind you so more strength is required to pull them up over your hands
2. The pike press requires shoulders and hips go more forward of wrists in order to counterbalance the legs. The more forward you lean, the more strength you need to use.
3. Initiate the pike press with feet close to hands so hips are high. This requires hamstrings to be flexible.
4. Rotate feet slightly inward and flex them when you lift up. This will help engage quads which in turn help activate core muscles. You need a lot of core to lift your legs up in a pike.
5. Drills 2 and 3 can be done at the wall. All the drills will help you with building strength and getting the shoulder position needed for the pike.

My new website is almost finished, FINALLY!
