Learning how to #handstand quite literally changed my life as crazy as that sounds. The first 10 years of my yoga practice and teaching career I was very limited in what I thought I could do. I didn’t do so much as a headstand and never even dreamed of attempting a handstand because I was too afraid of getting hurt. But, with the encouragement of a teacher, at age 37, I began to practice advanced asana and handstands! It took me about a year to finally move away from the wall and balance on my own. ⠀ I have had the privilege for the last 6 years to travel all over the world teaching people this fun and exciting skill. Every yoga teacher doesn’t need to teach handstand, and frankly most shouldn’t. . Understand: this isn’t a function of snobbishness—it’s about keeping students safe from injury and bad habits. . Knowing rudimentary alignment cues from a 200-hour teacher training isn’t license enough to teach postures and movements you’ve only seen on Instagram. You need to know how it feels in your own body first to help lead others safely through the same experience. There’s also something to be said for doing the hard work of the practice, of trying and failing and trying again as many times as necessary until you master something. . Now, that’s not to say that teachers who can’t handstand (or performs any number of postures that are plainly ridiculous) are bad teachers. Definitely not. . We all have our limits; I certainly have mine. It doesn’t make you a lesser teacher to acknowledge them—it makes you a wise and honest one. . I understand there’s pressure to do all the things. Resist that shit. Learn the practice and teach what you know. Ignore everything else. . Edit: Practicing what I preach, I’ll be transparent about what I can’t do: hollowback.
