Second year PA students posed for their final session of practicum before starting rotations! Our students learned to write SOAP notes during practicum sessions this quarter in preparation for their year of clerkships beginning in April.

I can’t believe it’s my last day of my ER rotation in Woodstock! Honestly this month flew by, but I guess time flies when you’re having fun ‍♀️ . Here are some things I learned from my ER rotation, would love any comments or tips from you guys too! . ✔️ Bring a notebook! Going on your phone all the time makes you look less engaged, even if you’re just writing stuff down. I love having something to physically write in . ✔️ If there’s something you don’t know the answer to or a new presentation read about it after! This helps to solidify the new information . ✔️ Be vocal about what you hope to accomplish! Set goals for yourself for the rotation as well as for each shift . ✔️ Be open to feedback! Constructive criticism will help you become a better physician (even if your ego hurts at the time) . ✔️ Be nice to the nurses. They can be your best friends and SO helpful! They’re also a huge knowledge source . ✔️ Really wish I had some lit ultrasound skills, after all, POCUS is the future . ✔️ Grab scrubs to wear for the next shift (don’t tell anyone I said this) - this way you don’t have to change a million times . ✔️ Drink water!! Can’t stress how important hydration is, it’ll give you way more energy (versus drinking 20 coffees) . ✔️ Look for opportunities - there are lots of cool procedures to be had if you express interest to your staff . ✔️ Have fun! “Are you sure I can’t take just one more semester off?” I pleaded with my grad school advisor a few weeks ago. “I’m sorry,” she responded empathetically. “If you do, you’ll have to reapply to the program.” . I’ve been studying to become a family nurse practitioner (FNP) for what seems like forever. I took breaks when I got married, when I moved to Atlanta, and, most recently, when I had my baby. But I always went back to school. Slowly but surely I chipped away at the program. It didn’t matter how long it took. I was going to complete my degree. . Did it suck to fall behind so much? Sure it did. I watched my peers go on to graduate without me. I watched students that were once behind me race ahead of me. But that was alright because the pace didn’t matter. I was going to complete my degree. . Now I return with just three classes/clinicals left until graduation. I’m returning to school as a mother now. No more time off, I have to make it work. It doesn’t matter that I’m taking the long route. I am going to complete my degree.

As a man I now understand how a 'simple' conversation can change the way a boy views sex for the rest of his life. Welcome to my office ‍⚕️ ___ Top 5 things I love about working at an Urgent Care—in no specific order: 1) 12 Hr Shifts: I just can’t do 9-5 —so dreadful! 2) Performing Minor Procedures: FB removal, sutures, splints, I&D, avulsion tx, etc. I love being hands on! 3) I get a balanced variety of Peds, Adult, OB, & Gero! Constantly keeping me on my toes as far as EBP— I rather use it than lose it! 4) You get to refer back to PCP for management of Chronic conditions: may fav documentation is “Advised to F/U with PCP within 3-5 days” 5) Walk-in only—You never know what will be walking through the door. Today one of my patients raved about PAs after his visit. He told me we’re great, and I have to say I agreed. The reason being that we expand access to care - it’s why we’re here! He’s one of the physician’s patients, but he was booked up today in our other office. Our staff told him they could fit him into my schedule today. The alternative, which he had considered over the weekend, was to go to the emergency room or an urgent care center. Here’s the thing - if it were emergent, then sure, those are great options. This was an urgent situation that could wait until after the weekend, so he chose to wait, hoping to see his doctor. Hoping to see the doctor who performed his surgery and who has access to his pertinent records. Well I’m not that person, but I’m a damn good alternative. Besides my medical education and training, I have access to those records - I know exactly what was done and when. I know what was prescribed, and his complete medication list and past medical history. And I have access to said doctor at any time really. I provided him the care that he needed and he was happy to be in a familiar place with somebody who is qualified. I’m not trying to brag, but rather spread awareness and educate! #YourPAcan - tagging some awesome PAs ‍⚕️

I find it hard to put into words what ‘Crossfit Health’ and becoming aligned with like minded physicians means to me, so coming across this post and the lines ‘The mission? To rebuild our healthcare system from one of authoritarian symptom management into one of proactive empowerment’ resonates with me on a level I’m sure few will understand. There is a war taking place. Not just between big pharma/big sugar and doctors who want the absolute best for our patients, but also between doctors themselves; specifically, between doctors unknowingly complicit in owning a mindset of treating patient’s symptoms forever (and ignoring the root of the problem) versus those fixated on not only reversing an ailment entirely but preventing it in the first place. PA program day ‍⚕️❤️ Not many get to say they are the first graduating class of their PA program, but my classmates and I will My program is pretty unique compared to other PA programs around.
